At the courthouse, I fidn’t expect to see Ivy Hayes.
“Miss Carter, thank you for being willing to let us be together.”
I ignored her and Ingred to look at Camden.
Over the past three years, he and Ivy had been all over the gossip mill, but it never got shoved in my face.
Now that we were getting divorced, he wouldn’t be so tasteless as to bring Ivy right in front of me.
“Who told you? Why are you here?”
Sure enough, Camden’s voice was dark as he questioned her.
Ivy shrank back a little, but she’d always been bold. Soon she was giggling and playfully hitting Camden
“If I didn’t come, you wouldn’t have your rebound ready!”
After hearing that, Camden’s expression grew even darker.
People around us started looking over with disdain.
I couldn’t help thinking–how could a thirty–year–old be so clueless and tactless?
And didn’t she know there was a mandatory waiting period for divorce?
More and more people were staring. I didn’t want to be part of their circus act, so I walked away first.
Ivy was Camden’s problem to deal with.
After all, in the past, no matter how much Ivy had led Camden into rebellious behavior, she’d never provoked me to my face.
By the same token, I’d never gone looking for her either.
But today, probably because they were so close to making it official, she couldn’t hold back anymore.
While waiting in line, my mind wandered. Dylan was actually right–when Camden was with me, he was mature and steady, never showing his emotions as openly as he just had.
Even in yesterday’s confession video, he was still reserved and restrained.
When I came out of the courthouse again, Ivy was gone.
Camden awkwardly tried to explain:
“I didn’t ask her to come.”
I didn’t say anything, just nodded to show I understood.
“Camden, see you in a month.”
This time, I was the one who said goodbye first and walked away.
I moved back into my own place.
Everything had been packed up last night, and the local courier had already delivered it all.
After marrying Camden, Mom was terrified I’d be looked down on because of our different social classes, so she emptied her savings to buy me this
apartment.
After getting everything sorted, I felt exhausted and lay down on the couch to rest.

My consciousness drifted off without me realizing it.
I dreamed about the first time I met Camden.
Having lost my father as a child, I was timid and lived on the sidelines at school, barely noticed by anyone.
Thick bangs, glasses that covered half my face, plain clothes—they were all my shields.
Until my sophomore year, when a basketball hit me in the head. Dazed, I sat on the ground unable to get up.
A clear, gentle voice spoke near my ear:
“Hey, are you okay?”
He helped me up and said:
“You have really beautiful eyes.”
Looking into those concerned eyes, I snapped back to reality, grabbed my broken glasses, and ran away in panic.
But that day, the sound of cicadas in the oak grove by the basketball court echoed in my ears for a long time.
