Chapter 7
That’s how it goes with people’s boundaries–they just keep retreating step by step.
It wasn’t until I was wheeled out of the operating room that I finally understood this truth.
But seeing Nina exhausted to the bone, I still gave in.
“You need to rest.”
Through the oxygen mask, I wasn’t sure if she could hear me clearly.
But we’re best friends–best friends are connected at the heart.
When she saw me wake up, despite looking completely worn out, she still managed to smile at me.
“The surgery was a success.”
Liar.
But I didn’t call her out on it.
“That’s great news.”
After the surgery, my delayed rebellious phase finally kicked in.
As a doctor, Nina couldn’t stay by my side 24/7.
When she wasn’t around, I’d execute my escape–from–the–hospital–room plan.
“Miss, why are you sneaking out again?”
I hadn’t even made it out of the hallway before I had a little shadow following me.
It was one of Nina’s patients, a little girl.
“Dr. Peterson said you’re not supposed to leave.”
“Shh-”
I quickly put my finger to my lips.
“Emma, keep it down.”
Kids these days are too hard to fool. No matter how much I sweet–talked her, I still couldn’t escape the fate of being dragged back to my room.
“Mia Carter?“/

Hearing someone call my name, I immediately turned around.
It was Camden Shaw.
“What are you doing here?”
“What are you doing here?”
Two identical questions, spoken at the same time.
“Oh, I got a little sick, and since Nina works at this hospital, I came to see her.”
After hearing my response, his eyes looked me up and down.
I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze.
After he finished sizing me up, I waited for his answer.
But he didn’t say anything.
Familiar footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway.
Nina had finished her rounds.
“Sorry, I have to go.”
After saying that, I grabbed Emma’s little hand and turned to leave.
When it came to protecting me, Nina was as fierce as a mother hen protecting her chicks. Even my mom said Nina and I must have been sisters in a past life.
I’ll never forget when I told Nina about the divorce/she spent an entire morning cursing Camden without repeating
herself once.
I was deeply impressed by her fighting spirit.
But this was a hospital. What if Nina couldn’t control herself and got into a conflict with Camden?
Doctors getting into disputes with patients–that’s the kind of thing that makes the evening news.
When I got back to my room, I relaxed and patted my chest, giving myself credit for being so clever.
I’d avoided a major catastrophe.
Suddenly, a snort of laughter from the doorway brought me back to reality.
I turned around to see Nina leaning against the hospital room door, with Emma also looking at me with confusion.
I smiled sheepishly.
“Emma, let me walk you back to your room.”
Chapter 7
Nina coaxed the little girl with the gentlest voice.
I sat on the bed, bored, waiting for Nina to take Emma back to her room.
“That’s all the backbone you’ve got?”
As soon as Nina came back, her sharp tongue targeted me. I was really starting to miss the version of her from a month ago.
“I already ran into Camden earlier. If I was gonna curse him out, I would’ve done it then.”
I tentatively scooted closer to her.
“Don’t be mad. I was just worried you two might get into a fight and it would look bad for you.”
She was a sucker for this kind of reasoning, but she still rolled her eyes at me.
Sunlight streamed in, warm and cozy.
“I heard the psychology department got a new therapist who specializes in hypnosis.”
Just as I was about to fall asleep, she suddenly spoke up and startled me.
“Hypnosis might be able to recover memories.”
