Chapter7: Soothing Him
Evelyn handed Caleb the pen. Savannah’s eyes widened with anticipation. Seeing Caleb sign the divorce papers, a triumphant smile played on her lips..
“Evelyn, you’re so ungrateful! If I had a husband like Caleb, I’d be laughing all night!”
Evelyn gave Savannah a knowing look. ‘Look at your eager face.”
Caleb tossed the signed agreement to Evelyn.
ye’re done. Why are you still targeting Savannah?”
Ignoring Evelyn, he lowered his voice to Lily. “If you want to come home, call Daddy anytime.”
Lily looked up at Caleb, her hand tightly gripping Evelyn’s. Caleb’s gaze was cold and distant.
“Lily is my daughter. She can come back anytime. But you… you won’t find it so easy to come
back.”
He looked down on Evelyn with a condescending air, warning her that this was a terrible mistake; she would pay a heavy price.
Evelyn smiled.“Even if the path ahead is a cliff, I won’t turn back.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Caleb’s face, quickly disappeared.
“Thirty days later, courthouse. See you then.” It was a relief to Evelyn. She took Lily’s hand and walked to the door. After putting on their shoes, she turned back, looking at Tommy one last
time.
“Tommy, I’m not coming back.”
Tommy lashed out.“Just go! You always make
ldy angry! I hate you!
After Evelyn and Lily left, Savannah complained to Caleb, “Evelyn’s got an affected style! Women are so emotional! Housewives are the worst! No skills, no career, without the Reed family, shel Be begging on the streets!”
She revealed her feelings. If I got divorced, I’d leave with nothing! Even if I didn’t love him anymore, I wouldn’t cause trouble for someone I once loved.”
She glanced at Caleb, but his expression remained unchanged.
“She wants me to back off,” Caleb scoffed. Who does she think she is?”
Savannah couldn’t suppress her smile. Seven years of marriage, and Caleb had never truly loved. Evelyn.
Two days later.
Tommy entered the study. “Daddy, Mommy’s phone is off.”
Caleb sat at his desk, not looking up.
Tommy nervously scratched his head.“Mommy left without finishing my art project, and it’s due. tomorrow. What do I do?”
Caleb’s reply was cold.“Do it yourself.”
“Daddy,” Tommy asked hesitantly, ‘Can I ask Sav to come over and help me with it?”
Caleb still didn’t look at at him.“Suit yourself.”

“Yay!” Tommy cheered, running out of the study. No Evelyn wasn’t a big deal; he had Sav.
Half an hour later, Savannah arrived. She sat down on the floor with Tommy, but within thirty minutes, Tommy’s face was red with frustration.
“Building a space fortress out of straws, and you can’t do it?!”
Savannah stared at the scattered straws in front of her, completely lost.
“This is too difficult. It’s impossible to finish it tonight.”
Tommy protested, “Mommy almost finished it! You just need to do the last step!” Savannah hesitated. She didn’t want to admit she was less skilled than Evelyn.“Let’s do something simpler. How about a phone made of straws?”
She showed Tommy pictures she’d found online.
“That’s too easy!”
“Let’s just make something simple and move on!” Savannah hadn’t done a craft project since middle school; this was tedious and childish. “Tommy, come on, I can take you street racing.”
The offer was tempting, but Tommy hesitated.
“But a simple project won’t get me a sticker.”
“I’ll buy a ton of stickers online for you!”
Tommy looked at her as if she were an idiot.
“Sav, do you usually wear fakes?”
Savannah denied it instantly.“I never wear fakes!”
Tommy raised his voice.“You want me to take those stickers to school so everyone can laugh at me? Only the stickers from the teacher are real! Have you heard of the emperor’s new clothes?” He scoffed.“That’s self–deception!”
Being scolded by a five–year–old, Savannah’s face was. a kaleidoscope of colors.
“Fine, fine! I’ll build the space fortress.” If Evelyn could do it, so could she.
Ten minutes later, amidst Tommy’s horrified screams, the nearly–completed space fortress collapsed under Savannah’s clumsy hand.
Tommy sat on the floor, petrified.“You… you… you… Give me back my space fortress!!”
“Tommy, it’s not my fault! Your mom’s fortress was shoddy!”
Tommy was on the verge of tears. “I need to turn it in tomorrow! I want my mommy!”
Savannah grabbed him.“Your

She scrolled through her contacts. “I’ll get some people to help you build a space fortress a million. times better than your mom’s!”
She called her male friends, but none wanted to come over and help with a kindergarten art project.
“Forget the fortress, let’s go drinking! I’ll get you some girls too.”
Savannah was tempted. “Really? I love drinking with girls.”
After hanging up, Savannah lost interest in the project. She was going out with her friends, so she

to hire someone online to help her make that stupid fortress.
She confidently told Tommy, “Someone’s on it! Don’t worry, when
you wake up tomorrow, you’ll
see an amazing space fortress!”
“Really?” Tommy was doubtful.
Savannah hugged him.“I never lie to you.”
Tommy was still worried.“Mommy often stayed up all night for my projects.” Was it reliable to pay someone online to do this?
vannah sneered. “She’s stupid. She could’ve paid someone, but she had to do it herself. Tommy, let’s go for a ride!”
Tommy’s eyes lit up.“Wow! Are we going street racing?”
Savannah quickly put a finger to her lips.“Don’t let your dad know.”
Tommy covered his mouth. This was a secret they couldn’t share with anyone in the Reed family. “Sav, I want you to be my mommy!”
Then I have to marry your dad.”
Then marry my dad!”
Savannah winked. “You have to help me with that!”
The next day.
Tommy stood outside the school, watching and waiti bag almost as tall as herself.

“Tommy, why are you standing here?” Lily asked curiously.
Tommy clutched his shirt, looking stubborn. “I’m waiting for my project! Sav will bring it soon!” He rolled his eyes at Evelyn.“Sav’s space fortress will be a hundred times better than yours!
