At that, the rest of the firefighters surrounded Joey in a tight circle.

Without another word, they left the hospital with Joey in tow.
And so, the plan for him to fake his death was a bust, and my mother–in–law fainted on the spot.
I didn’t pay any heed to her, only asking a nurse to treat my wounds and bandage them up before I followed the police back to the police station.
I was completely compliant and supplied them any information they needed, and I was quickly removed of any suspicion whatsoever. A mere two hours later, and I was allowed to leave the police station.
I went to the fire department, where Tony and the others were choking up while making arrangements for the wake. They treated Joey like a cherished brother and a trusted captain, so I could only imagine their disappointment once they discovered his true colors.
And so, Joey was placed into an icy, refrigerated coffin, wearing only the thinnest layer of clothes. His lips were frosted purple, and he was going to die from frostbite before the night ended.
The wake was filled with people, however, so he didn’t even have the chance to be relieved of his icy punishment.
At night, I switched on the hidden cameras I planted at the venue, and my in–laws were there as I expected.
As soon as they arrived, they opened the coffin and helped Joey out of it, practically plastering every inch of his skin with heat packs and wrapping him with a cotton blanket.
“Joey, you just have to hold on for three days! Once this is over, you can Winnie and be free!”
Joey was already too weak to even lift a finger, so he had to rely on my mother–in–law to feed him.
“Whose idea was this, even?” He asked angrily.
In response, my mother–in–law’s expression was filled with disdain. “Who else but that useless b*tch!”
Joey was still shivering, but his glare was as sharp as a knife. “I should’ve made sure she died in that fire and dealt with her once and for all! If she was dead, I wouldn’t have had to suffer this cold and be hungry the whole day!”

hit me with a wave of disappointment.
He and I came to know each other In university. Back then, he was charismatic and cheerful, treating me with kindness and care.
I thought for sure back then that he was the man I was going to be with for the rest of my life, and it was only until I married him that I found out about his childhood friend, Winnie.
He always told me that they were nothing more than friends, so I ended up lowering my guard.
In the end, she was ultimately the reason why he plotted my demise.
“Mom, has she done IVF yet?” He asked, the thought finally occurring to him.
My mother–in–law shook her head. “There was too much happening that day, so she slipped out of it like an eel.”
Joey furrowed his brows, clearly displeased.
“Winnie’s too afraid to give birth because of the pain, so make sure Nina gives birth to Winnie’s and my baby after I leave, no matter how you do it!”
He didn’t want Winnie to endure even the slightest bit of pain, yet was willing to use my body as a tool to carry their baby.
Thinking back to how that b*stard son of mine was cackling while he pushed me down the stairs, I reached to touch my stomach.
