Chapter 3
Charles had never seen me like this before. He stood frozen for a moment before storming out, slamming the door
behind him.
He even took the bag of cherries with him.
“So you don’t need my charity? Fine. Let’s see how stubborn you can be.”
Not even ten minutes after he left,Olivia posted another update.
“First night officially moving in! Ugh,the decor is so tacky. Seriously, what kind of straight–man aesthetic is this?”
Attached was a photo of the apartment above mine.
The one she called “tacky“-I had designed it myself.
Charles replied under her post.
“Yeah,it’s awful. Let’s tear it down and redo it.”
I rubbed my sore eyes. The tears had long since dried.
Houses could be remodeled.
Old lovers could be replaced with new ones.
To him,I was nothing more than a discarded toy, long past its novelty.
Another harassment call came in. I yanked out my SIM card and replaced it with the one I used for international performances.
Back then,a prestigious overseas dance company had extended an offer to me.
I turned it down because I couldn’t bear to be apart from Charles.
Now,my fingers trembled as I dialed the contact from that time. “Hello,is this Mr. Jason?”
The other end of the line was silent. If not for the faint sound of breathing, I would’ve thought the call had dropped.
Why wasn’t he saying anything? Had he seen the trending news?
My grip on the phone tightened,my palms damp with sweat. “Mr. Jason, please listen. I didn’t do those things. I wanted to clarify, but my social media accounts have been locked down. Whenever I post from a new account, the post gets deleted within seconds. I-”
“Wait for me.”
A low, muffled male voice interrupted me. Unexpectedly familiar–yet completely different from the blond–haired

Jason in my memory.
I froze. “You’re not Jason?”
“Wait for me.”
He repeated himself and hung up.
I was confused. Before I could process it,a message popped up on my phone.
“Taking off. Turning off my phone.”
A few seconds later,another message.
“Wait for me to return. I’ll take you away.”
His words were cryptic, but at least they were a promise.
I let out a slow breath.
Over the next few days,I packed my things and prepared my documents.
I didn’t have much. Everything I owned fit into a single suitcase.
I didn’t take anything Charles had bought for me.
Not because I was noble, and certainly not because I still had feelings for him.
He had cheated. He had crushed me completely.
But when my family fell apart
and the world turned against me,when everyone wanted me dead to atone for my parents‘ sins,it was Charles who saved me.
I didn’t know how he convinced his father, but after that night kneeling in the rain,he was cast out from the Carter.
family.
At the same time, the internet’s relentless attacks against me suddenly vanished.
He gave me a new identity. A second chance at life.
He had caught me when I was falling.
He had stayed with me through the darkest days.
And for that, I could never truly hate him.
All I wanted now was to walk away peacefully.
After three days of silence, Charles came back.
“Had time to calm down? Thought things through?”

I nodded my voice steady. “Yes, I have
His lips curled in satisfaction mistaking my words for surrender.
“Good Charlotte Edwards, remember your place.”
“If you behave.I’ll keep you.”
“But if you overstep. I’ll make sure you lose everything.”
He threatened me like this, but when I stayed silent,a trace of confusion flickered in his eyes,
“Are you done?” I placed the divorce papers on the table. “If so,sign this.”
Charles stared at the document, his gaze turning cold.
Charles stared at the piece of paper, his deep black eyes gradually turning cold.
“Charlotte Edwards, you clearly knew about my relationship with Olivia a long time ago. Why didn’t you just pretend nothing happened, like before?”
“If you just acted like you didn’t know and continued being Mrs. Carter in peace, wouldn’t that have been better?”
“She has what you have. And what she doesn’t have,I can give to you too. Charlotte Edwards, your heart shouldn’t be so greedy.”
I stared at Charles in a daze, unable to believe these words were coming from his mouth.
I still remembered our first year of high school when Charles’s father cheated on his mother. After his mother found out,the whole house was in chaos.
His father scolded her harshly,“Men in my position–who doesn’t keep a mistress outside? I’m not divorcing you,so what are you making a fuss about?”
That day,Charles picked up a baseball bat and smashed the porcelain vase beside his father. As the shards scattered,he spoke coldly, word by word.
