Broken Daydream) Chapter 2

Hudson left in a Maybach, and a tow truck took his supercar away. My car’s
hood was crushed, and one headlight was smashed.
“This is a new car! I just bought it yesterday! What are you going to do about
this?” I asked.
Chloe ignored me the entire ride home. As soon as we arrived, she
immediately clung to our father, claiming I was bullying her. Our father, Richard,
patted Chloe’s head affectionately, then turned to me.
“Why are you making a mountain out of a molehill? You don’t act like a big
sister at all,” he chided.
Chloe insisted on driving that morning. She didn’t even have a driver’s
license; she failed her driving test five times. Richard was worried about her
safety and insisted I accompany her.
My stepmother, Deborah, came out of the kitchen with a fruit platter. There
were only three forks.
They happily ate watermelon and mango, as if I didn’t exist.
“Hudson looked at me without blinking. I thought he was different, but he’s
just like any other guy,” Chloe boasted, smugly displaying Hudson’s WeChat
contact information on her phone.

“Once Chloe marries Hudson, we’ll be family with the Thornes!” Deborah
clapped, and Richard joined in her daydream.
Then Chloe’s tone shifted. She offered Richard a piece of durian.“Dad, I still
owe 300,000 bucks in tuition for the school.”
Richard’s brow furrowed. We relied on our small shop in the old town, but
the city’s redevelopment plans had bypassed the area, leaving our business
struggling. That socialite school cost 500,000 bucks per student, promising
access to marry the rich. Chloe had spent all of her three years after college on
cosmetic procedures and taking photos like a socialite. She never worked. The
previous tuition of 200,000 bucks had wiped out Richard’s savings.
“Richard, Chloe went to that school so you could live a better life,” Deborah
said, showing off her large gold bracelet.“If you refuse to pay for this, don’t
expect any help from Chloe in the future.” She gestured towards me.“Besides,
someone’s working, right? Families help each other.”
She was implying I should pay. In my past life, I had sunk into debt to
support Chloe’s dreams. Debt collectors had caused a scene at my company,
costing me my job. They seemed completely oblivious to the damage to Hudson’s
car, fully convinced he wouldn’t make Chloe pay. I wasn’t going to repeat their
mistake of pinning my hopes on an unattainable dream. So, before they could
ask, I announced my intention to move out.
“I’ll move out and remove myself from the household register.”

Deborah scoffed, believing I was jealous of Chloe’s potential as a
socialite.“The most important thing for a woman is a pretty face and a rich
husband,” she sneered.“With your measly salary, moving out is laughable.”

My phone vibrated; a colleague notified me of an emergency meeting. I
went to my room to gather my materials.
Chloe dismissively said I was an idiot. She thought that even if I worked my
ass off, I’d never earn what she could with a finger snap. Richard
condescendingly added, “Yonnie, you’ll have to butter your sister up. If she’s happy, she might just gift you an apartment, and you won’t have to rent anymore.”
Chloe offered a magnanimous smile, waiting for my submission.
I clenched the documents in my hand, my gaze sweeping across the three of them.“Hudson’s money isn’t Chloe’s, and the money I earn will always be mine,” I said firmly.“Beauty has its advantages, but beauty without substance is a disaster.
You’d better check the price of the car you hit.”
