The car behind honked impatiently. The light turned green. Hudson put his
hands on the wheel and accelerated.“His sons are still watching me, so Qingxi
Town project has to succeed.” I heard the ruthless determination in his voice.
As he dropped me off, he looked at the apartment building. Before he drove
away, I saw something strange in his eyes. I politely smiled and ignored his

hesitation.
That night, Richard relentlessly called me. He said Chloe was in a coma and
needed a massive amount of money for treatment. I blocked his number.
The next morning, I saw him and Deborah outside my company. They were
frantically searching for me. It was rush hour, and the street was crowded with
people. I called my boss, saying I had a field trip with Hudson.
Ten meters away from the entrance, Deborah caught up to me, grabbing my
hair. Her eyes were bloodshot. “You ruined Chloe, and you wanna get away with
it?” Richard, panting, tried to search my bag.“Money! Give me the money!”
I kicked Deborah with my heel, the pain made her scream. Then, I snatched
my bag back.
“This is all your fault,” I said.“You didn’t teach Chloe to be practical; you
filled her head with unrealistic dreams. I know you want her to succeed and me
to be a beggar, but it’s the other way around now.”

Deborah gritted her teeth, wanting to tear me apart.

“Why don’t you sell the house if you want to help her that much? It’s worth
at least 200 grand.”
Richard pointed at me and called me an ungrateful wretch. “Where would we
live if we sold the house?”
“It’s none of my business, you’ve never cared about me anyway.”
I put on my shoes and hailed a cab. Someone shoved me from behind, and I
sprawled into the middle of the road.
Deborah’s voice echoed. “You bitch! Once you’re dead, your money will be
ours!”
A car sped towards me. I saw the driver’s wide eyes, the tires screeching. The
familiar dread washed over me; I felt frozen. Just as the car was about to hit me, a
black sports car swerved, hitting the other vehicle, sending it reeling backwards.
I was stunned. Hudson emerged from the car, frantically checking if I was
okay. A crowd gathered, but their concern was for Hudson’s Aston Martin.
Weak and trembling, I could barely stand. Hudson supported me, leading me
to a nearby café.“I’ll handle the rest. Just calm down.”
The morning news was on TV; the Lei family and twelve other major

companies had partnered with the Thornes. The news prominently featured Lei
Xin, who was holding Hudson’s arm. Mr. Wan and Mr. Xia were deferential
towards her. In their world, only power and status brought you respect. Beauty
alone was useless.
Half an hour later, Hudson returned. He told me Deborah had fled but the
police were searching for her.
“Let me take you home.” He naturally reached for my hand. The café was
empty; the staff were outside watching the commotion. I pulled away, saying I
was fine and could go home alone.
Hudson gently held my shoulder, his gaze soft as he looked into my
eyes. “With your abilities, you could be a director at my company. Lei Xin and I are having a business marriage. Without her, my position is unstable. I’ll give you anything you want, except for the title of Mrs. Thorne.” Perhaps his happiest memories were with his sister, which was why he was interested in me.
