Chapter 12
I sniffled, then said seriously, “Ryan, from now on, let’s go our separate ways.”
“North, I won’t let you go.”
His voice was bitter. “Actually, not long after we separated, I regretted it. I even had Long arrange to meet you so I could confess to you again.”
“Thank you.”
Em being serious.”
He said urgently, “North, after all these years of breaking up and getting back together, I finally realized that the one I truly love is you. I want to be with you and never separate again. Okay?”
He lowered his gaze to the red book in my hand.
“Gray is cold by nature and ruthless in his actions. He’s twenty–nine and has never had a girlfriend.
Someone like him either has mental issues or physical problems. If he marries you, it must be for
some ulterior motive.”

I actually felt a little uneasy with what he said.
He was right.
Gray had never had a girlfriend, but then he suddenly married someone like me–someone with no
background.
It was impossible for him to have no ulterior motives.
But what was his goal?
With that question lingering, that evening when I had a video call with Gray, I found myself staring at him with more curiosity than usual.
But the words I wanted to speak…

They kept getting stuck in my throat.
Finally, he gently asked, “North, is there something you want to say to me?”
“1…”
How should I put it?
Should I ask him why, at his age, he had never been in a relationship? Or if he had some kind of psychological or physical problem?
Either question would be deeply offensive to any man, right?
the end, I shook my head.
“I’m just a bit tired. I want to go to sleep.”
The man on the other side of the video call paused.
“North, you can say whatever you want, don’t hold back with me.”
His voice was gentle, which made it even harder for me to ask him such a question.
My best friend excitedly told me that Green and Ryan had officially fallen out.
Green wouldn’t break up with him and went to his company to cause a scene. Ryan slapped her and sent her tumbling down the stairs, breaking her leg.
The two families were now embroiled in a big scandal.
Green threatened Ryan, saying if he didn’t marry her, he would end up in jail.
Ryan, however, was resolute, saying he would rather go to jail than marry her.
I simply smiled when I heard all of this.
My best friend looked at me in confusion.
“North, are you forgetting the pain after the wound healed? Those two scumbags hurt you like this, and now they’re finally getting their comeuppance. How can you not be happy about it?”
“Because I’ve let it go.”
You’ve let it go so quickly?”

My best friend thought for a moment, then nodded. “I guess so. If those two hadn’t caused so much trouble, you wouldn’t have ended up with Gray, such a wealthy and kind man.”
“By the way, why haven’t I seen you video calling your husband lately?”
Hearing this, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
Ever since hearing Ryan’s words, I’d developed an odd feeling toward Gray.
Every time I looked at him, I felt like there was a layer of gauze between us.
He seemed so mysterious and it made me uneasy.
I used graduation as an excuse and started avoiding him.
In contrast, Ryan had been chasing after me non–stop during this time.
He either blocked me at school or brought his friends to my restaurant under the pretense of late–night snacks to express his feelings.
To avoid him, I had to move back into my best friend’s house.
It was only when he and Green had a falling out that I finally had a few peaceful days.
But a week later, I saw him again.
He was standing downstairs in front of my best friend’s apartment.
The cold wind was biting, and yet his coat was thin and wrinkled.
His hair, always perfectly styled, was now a tangled mess, his face pale, drained of the energy it
once held.
I remembered the last time I saw him like this.
