Chapter 6
The room erupted in gasps.
Tyler Horton froze for a few seconds before realizing what had happened.
He wiped at the frosting and cake smeared across his face, his voice trembling with rage.
“Elizabeth! How dare you?!”
I looked him squarely in the eye. “Why wouldn’t I dare? Didn’t you call me here yourself?”
Tyler, who had always carried himself with an air of superiority, had never been this
humiliated.
Even his group of friends sitting in the private room burst into muffled laughter.
Tyler had sought to preserve his dignity, but now he was the butt of everyone’s jokes.
Seeing Tyler’s loss of face, Sarah Carlisle quickly stood up from the couch, playing the role of the peacemaker.
She hurried over with a concerned expression and said softly to Tyler:
“Tyler, maybe there’s some misunderstanding between us and Elizabeth. Let’s talk about this family matter in private.”
She then turned to me, her face all sweetness and grace.
“Sis, let’s step outside to talk.”
“Fine. Wherever suits you,” I replied, crossing my arms.
Sarah led us to the staircase, where she began gently wiping the remnants of cake from Tyler’s face.
Watching their display of false tenderness, I folded my arms and cut straight to the point.
“I’ve made up my mind. You two really are a match made in heaven. I’m done. Marry

Sarah,” I said.
Tyler, who had been ready to unleash a tirade, stopped mid–sentence, stunned.
Sarah, on the other hand, feigned distress, her voice trembling:
“Sis, what are you saying? I never meant to ruin your marriage.”
I sneered.
“You’ve already climbed into his bed, so why keep up the pretense?
“Or are you here to join this warm little family of ours instead?”
Sarah didn’t respond, but the eager anticipation in her eyes as she looked at Tyler betrayed her true feelings–she was ready to take my place.
What I didn’t expect was Tyler’s reaction.
Instead of looking thrilled, he clenched his jaw and growled:
“Elizabeth, what nonsense are you spouting? You know full well I can’t marry Sarah.”
His words landed like a slap across Sarah’s face, shattering her moment of triumph.
Ilaughed.
“Why not? If you can bring her home to fool around, what’s stopping you from marrying
her?”
“Elizabeth, don’t push me!” Tyler gritted through his teeth.
“You know why! Sarah can’t have children. Without an heir, how can she become the mistress of the Horton family?”
I stared at him steadily.
“If you want the truth about the kidnapping, why not call the police? Are you afraid of what they might find?”

I caught a flicker of panic in Sarah’s eyes, though she quickly replaced it with a look of understanding and warmth.
She patted Tyler’s arm soothingly, then slipped off his jacket, draping it over her shoulders.
“Tyler, don’t be angry. Elizabeth’s just saying this in the heat of the moment. We’re family.”
She then turned to me with a gentle smile.
don’t be upset. You’re soaking wet–here, take this jacket to warm up.”
In that moment, as she placed the jacket over me, Sarah suddenly shoved me with all her strength.
I lost my balance and tumbled down the stairs.
Step by step, I rolled until I landed with a thud at the bottom, my hea slamming into the sharp edge of a decorative planter..
Warm liquid trickled down my forehead, and my vision in my right eye was obscured by a
sheet of red.
Amidst the searing pain, a flood of memories came rushing back.
I suddenly remembered everything.
I remembered walking past Sarah’s room on the day of my mother’s memorial service,
hearing the rhythmic creak of the bed and the unmistakable sounds of passion from within.
Sarah’s voice, breathy and teasing, drifted through the door:
“Tyler, you’re so bold. Do you even know what day it is today?”
“That’s what makes it exciting. Don’t you love it?” Tyler replied.
“I love it so much…”
“Sarah, I adore you. If it weren’t for this damn engagement, I wouldn’t spend a single second with Elizabeth.

“She’s nothing compared to you except for her family background.”
Standing outside the door, I had gripped the items in my hands tightly, forcing myself not to
make a sound.
Now, lying by the planter, my head and body throbbed with excruciating pain.
The worst pain of all, though, came from my abdomen.
was clear now. Long before Sarah framed me for the kidnapping and assault, Tyler had already betrayed me.
I clenched my teeth in hatred.
A passerby’s voice reached my ears: “She looks like she’s seriously hurt. Should we check on
her?”
Before anyone could act, Sarah let out a pitiful cry:
“Tyler, my stomach hurts so much!”
Tyler scooped her up in his arms without a second glance a
