Chapter 21
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, so Jeff even invested in Horton Corporation, clinking
glasses with Matt Horton at banquets.
Taking a sip of his wine, Jeff said, “I have a small request.”
att Horton signaled his willingness to listen.
“My wife didn’t have a very pleasant time in the Horton family.” Jeff put an arm around my waist and glanced at Matt. “Of course, you were overseas then and didn’t attend the
wedding. I have no issue with you.”
Matt immediately understood, “I’ll provide my respected parents with a more… enriched life
experience.”
Born from a difficult birth and never favored, Matt Horton was a ruthless executor who
acted swiftly.
That very day, Horton Sr. slipped on the stairs and ended up in the hospital.
Midway through the banquet, I found it stuffy inside and went out to the garden.
Sitting on the garden’s swing, I enjoyed the soft night breeze and the subtle fragrance in the
air. It was quite pleasant.
Just then, someone gave the swing a gentle push from behind.
The swing began to sway, and I thanked the person behind me without looking back.
They said nothing, just pushed a few more times.
I assumed it was a waiter and continued enjoying it, thinking nothing else.
Then the person spoke, “Elizabeth, when you were a child, your father used to push your
swing just like this. Do you remember?”
My heart thumped.

Gripping the swing’s rope tightly, I looked back.
The man pushing my swing was none other than my biological father, Barny Carlisle–an opportunist, heartless, and faithless.
I got off the swing and faced him coldly, “What are you doing here?”
Barny Carlisle looked much more haggard now. Seeing my guard go up, a hint of wounded sorrow crossed his face, “Elizabeth, I’m just here because I missed you and wanted to see
I refused to play along with his fatherly–charade, “Are you in some sort of trouble?”
Hearing my direct words, Barny Carlisle was pleasantly surprised “Elizabeth, you still understand your dad.”
He sighed and put on a pained expression, “You remarried so sudden without telling me. only found out after the wedding that you’ve become Jeff Vince’s wife.”
Seeing him try to pull the emotional string, I kept silent, letting him perform.
“Now that you’re doing well, Dad is happy. It’s just that our family business is in trouble. I have only you to rely on, so I’ve thickened my skin to ask for your help…”
I pointed towards the banquet hall “Jeff’s inside. Tell him yourself.”
Barny Carlisle didn’t expect me to toss him over to Jeff so decisively. He seemed displeased but couldn’t show it. “I have no connections with Jeff. It’d be better if you talked to him on my behalf, wouldn’t it?”
Folding my arms, I refused coldly,”No, it wouldn’t.”
Seeing my hard stance, Barny Carlisle’s anger flared.
He instinctively wanted to put on the authoritative air of a patriarch, but the current situation forced him to swallow his anger.
Instead, he reproached me in a muted tone, “Elizabeth, your father’s in a difficult time. How can you not help him?”

I narrowed my eyes,” When you smashed my head bloody with top, you g mentioned I was your daughter”
Back then, Sarah Carlisle had just arrived at the Cala household,
Her presence was like a thorn, constantly reminding my mother that her sweedy perfect marriage of over two decades was nothing but a fragile shell, easily prawed
My mother, soft hearted as she was, didn’t throw Serah out even though she diddare access Tyr either. She simply allowed her to remain because Sarah’s own mother had passed away
Sarah quickly discerned my mother’s compassion.
Every day, she greeted my mother and me with a warm smile. Every night, she brougir a tray of milk to my mother’s door.
She stood there diligently,“Mrs. Cala, you often have trouble sleeping please have somTE warm milk before bed.”
My mother ignored her at first, so Sarah stood there patiently until my mother, annoyed, finally opened the door and drank it once, right in front of her
Setting down the cup, my mother looked at Sarah wearily, “Enough. Don’t bring it again
Sarah offered a sweet smile and left
From that day on, she no longer brought milk. Instead, she found other opportunites no ingratiate herself with my mother.
Even the hardest steel can be bent with persistent effort, and my mother was kind by
nature,

Eventually, my mother tacitly accepted that our household now included one more perso
Then one morning, Barny Carlisle drank his coffee and suddenly collapsed, dizzy.
The servants rushed him to the hospital for a stomach pump. The contents were tested–someone had drugged it.
That day, I was the one who brought him the coffee.
