Chapter 2
The cake she had eaten yesterday was simply a practice cake they made with expired ingredients. Not even the card was included; the cake layers were uneven, and the cream had random patches of color.
Winona had thought that it was their first time making a cake and that it was just clumsy. She never imagined it was just a trial run in case their efforts today didn’t turn out well.
Her stomach churned again, and she vomited once more.
one in the hospital, she finished the IV drip, paid the bills, and left.
It was very cold outside. Winona took a taxi, but just as she was about to get in, she received a call from Felix.
“Wino, I forgot to take the gift box. Could you go to my house and bring it over?”
His voice was gentle, with a coaxing tone, completely forgetting about the food poisoning she had mentioned earlier.
Or perhaps he had already assumed it was just a lie.
“The gift box is on the shelf by the entrance. Hurry up, don’t delay us for the second party,” Jacob added loudly in the background.
Before Winona could respond, the call was hung up.
This was their habit, and the unspoken understanding after so many years of friendship. Asking her to help only required one sentence.
By the time Winona came to her senses, she had already unlocked the door to their house using her fingerprint and retrieved the gift box.
Forget it, it’s the last time. She would treat it as a final goodbye.
“Why are you so late?” As soon as they arrived, Jacob rushed over, snatching the gift box from her
hands.
“Since it’s Miko’s birthday today, I won’t argue with you,” Felix, dressed in a sharp black suit, flashed her a slight smile and turned to head towards the banquet hall.

She didn’t say anything, just wanted to leave quietly.
But she was stopped by Yumiko, who was coming toward her. “Wino sis, could you come over and give me something?”
Now, Yumiko was dressed in a high–end custom gown, looking like a pampered little princess.
Gone was the pitiable figure from before, the one who used to beg her for food, humbling herself at the foot of her company building.
Yumiko was adept at attaching herself to the right people. First, she had followed Winona everywhere, attending all events with her. After discovering that Felix and Jacob were from wealthy families, she had clung to them like glue, seizing every opportunity.to stay close.
She wasn’t unattractive and came from a poor family, which made it easy for people to feel
protective toward her.
Winona smiled. This kind of calculating woman was the one most despised by noble families. Only
the likes of Felix and Jacob would treat her like treasure.
Yumiko led her to the banquet hall, taking a drink from a waiter’s tray.
“Wino sis, come have a drink. You’ve really taken great care of them over the years,” she said, her eyes clearly flashing with a sense of pride.
Winona looked back at her, easily reading the sense of triumph in her eyes.
No matter how long they had been childhood friends, now Felix and Jacob had surrounded themselves with Yumiko, putting her at the center of their attention.
“You don’t need to. You can take care of them from now on,” Winona replied calmly, her face showing no embarrassment as she gently pushed away the drink Yumiko offered.
She had just come out of the hospital and didn’t want to go back in.
The two childhood friends, who had been laughing and listening to her reply from the side, froze upon hearing her words.
Jacob, with his straightforward personality, couldn’t hide his shock. He immediately questioned her, “Winona, what do you mean by that?”
Although Felix didn’t say anything, his eyes stayed fixed on her, clearly waiting for an explanation.
The literal meaning,” Winona said, refusing to explain further.

“Okay, don’t be mad.” Felix said, his tone softening.
Both of them relaxed slightly, clearly thinking that she was just upset because they had come to celebrate Yumiko’s birthday and had neglected her.
“When it’s your birthday, we’ll make you a beautiful cake and draw you a lovely greeting card,” Felix added, coming over to pull her toward him, but she instinctively pulled away.
She had once firmly believed that nothing could change their relationship.
Friendship, after all, is the most enduring and the most solid.
