Chapter 15
Upon reviewing the video, Maximo Myers quickly discerned the true mastermind behind it all: his nemesis, Julio Stone.
Consumed by rage, Maximo unleashed a torrent of fury, believing Julio had bribed the doctor. He imprisoned Julio, employing every form of torture imaginable, yet remained frustrated by Julio’s silence.
“If you’re brave enough, just kill me!” Julio taunted. “Arlette should have let you perish!”
“She got injured because of your actions, and ultimately, her death lies at your feet—not mine!”
“You’re just a rabid dog, destined to lose everyone you care about.”
“You won’t meet a peaceful end!”
Emerging from the basement, Maximo was drenched in blood, his eyes fiercely red, like a demon from a terrifying legend. He calmly wiped the blood from his hands.
In the center of the living room, Garrett Patterson was on his knees. Having served the Myers family for most of his life and treated like a family elder, recent events had left him a mere shadow of his former self. At last, he recognized who truly held power in the Myers household.
The old caretaker crawled toward Maximo, his voice trembling as he confessed.
“Sir, I’ll tell you everything, I’ll tell you!”
“Winnie never wanted to be just your sister. Her true desire was to be your wife!”
Maximo’s pupils narrowed sharply, his murderous red gaze losing its color in an instant. Winnie Hughes actually loved him?
He had always assumed the discord between Arlette and Winnie was due to inheritance concerns. But Winnie saw Arlette as a threat!
Maximo’s stomach twisted violently.
A nauseating wave of realization hit him.
Someone he’d always seen as his little sister harbored such unsettling thoughts about him!
In a flash, understanding dawned.
“Winnie always claimed Arlette bullied her, portraying herself as the victim of a cruel sister-in-law.”
“But the reality was she loathed Arlette, didn’t she?”
Garrett sobbed, consumed by regret and guilt: “Sir, I watched her grow up. How could I…”
“So you conspired with her to deceive me!”
Maximo erupted in fury.
Just then, Timothy Clark arrived, looking as if he’d been hit by a truck, his breath rapid and uneven.
“Mr. Myers, you…”
“Ah.”
Timothy hesitated, then handed over the documents directly.
While investigating the medical incident, Timothy had focused on the lead surgeon, also researching the initial hospital staff arrangements, and uncovered a shocking secret.
“Winnie hired a hitman to murder her!”
Maximo’s piercing gaze fell on the paper, almost burning through the thin stack of documents.
He’d considered everyone in the city who could be his enemy, never suspecting Winnie.
Even after seeing the video of her attacking Arlette, he hadn’t imagined she could commit murder.
“Back then, it was…” Timothy’s face was anguished, “It was your wife who donated the kidney for you.”
Maximo froze. Arlette’s repeated declarations about her donation replayed in his mind, and he had accused her of lying, claiming the lie could be easily uncovered.
Yes, so easily uncovered.
He could have verified it.
Just one test, and he would have known her innocence, seen through Winnie’s manipulation. Until Arlette’s death, until this very moment, he had never questioned it.
He remembered Arlette’s despair upon hearing she had to donate her kidney to Winnie. Her heart-wrenching words “I will die” echoed, shattering his recollection.
He clutched his head tightly, a beast-like growl escaping his throat.
“What have I done!”
Too blind to see through Winnie’s deceitful facade, he had blindly believed Arlette was malicious.
For Winnie, who disregarded human decency, he had destroyed his wife and unborn child.
He deserved to be alone, to grow old without comfort!
Endless rage and remorse churned and consumed him.
Maximo’s heart felt hollow.
“Arlette…”
Beside him, Timothy maintained a solemn demeanor, burdened with thoughts.
“Additionally… Mr. Myers, I’ve received an anonymous letter, traced only to New York.”
Timothy hesitated: “It’s about…”
“Mr. Myers, you should see for yourself.”
With a heavy heart, Timothy handed over the final, shocking document to his boss.
Maximo, engulfed in grief, took the file with numb hands.
He felt devastated, his soul torn apart. Winnie secretly loved him, Arlette was bullied by Winnie, Winnie hired someone to kill Arlette, Arlette donated a kidney for him…
What news could be more horrifying than all of this?
He opened the document.
