Chapter 42
“Huh? Boss, you didn’t really mean that, did your ring rushed up, trying to make amends. “Boss, you must be tired after operating on Mr. Matthew Sanchez. Let me give your legs a rub
“Scram, you think you can touch Boss’s legs? If she cuts off your hand, I won’t save you,” Devin warned. Then with a cheeky grin, he offered. “Boss, how about I massage your shoulders? Ease that tension?”
“Ease Boss’s tension? You’re not scared that she’ll punch you and send you flying?” Irving teased, chuckling
A knock at the door made Devin and Irving lock eyes, panicking and thinking if they were busted.
“Sweetheart, are you asleep?” Cherry’s voice came from the other side.
They pondered if Cherry had sensed something and came knocking.
“Not yet,” Yvonne answered gently, but when addressing her two underlings, her voice dropped to a stern whisper. “Grab the check and vanish from my sight in ten seconds”
“Boss..” Devin tried to say something more, but Yvonne’s cold voice cut him off. “Or else, the bonus is gone,” Yvonne warned.
At that, Devin didn’t hesitate to jump onto the balcony, “Catch you later, Boss”
“Dude, wait up! Why’d you leave me behind?” Irving called out, but seeing the warning in Boss’s narrowed eyes, he quickly added, “Boss, I’m out of here, right away.”
“You’ve got three seconds, Yvonne said, her action beat a clear sign of impatience.
Irving dashed to the balcony, “But there’s a dog down there! I’m too scared to jump
“Sweetheart, can I come in?” Cherry asked from outside the doce
Yvonne looked up to see Irving had leaped but was clinging to the railing, clearly terrified of the dog below.
The dog was indeed vicious, barking at him relentlessly. Yvonne decided she had to help.
“Hey, Boss,” Irving thought Yvonne had come to assist, but instead, she gave him a kick that sent him plummeting onto the grass, his backside smarting. Was this the boss’s way? he thought
The big dog spotted him, barked furiously, and bared its sharp teeth, about to snap at him. Irving screamed, fleeing for dear life.
Once Yvonne made sure Irving had gone, she opened the door. “Mom, aren’t you asleep yet?”
“I was worried you might be hungry. Not sure if you ate enough with Christopher tonight,” Cherry said, carrying a tray as she entered the bedroom. She paused, cocking her head at some strange noises. “Sweetheart, do you hear that? Sounds like a man being chased by a dog.”
There were yells from a man and barks from a dog. It painted a pretty chaotic picure.
“Nope.” Yvonne replied, cool as a cucumber.
“Guess I was hearing things.” Cherry set the tray down, displaying some finely made snacks. “Eat up while it’s warm.”
“Did you make these?” Yvonne was surprised, wondering if her mother’s cooking skills skyrocketed. They looked pretty good.
The chef did,” Cherry confessed, not wanting her daughter to try out her terrible dishes. “Dig in Cherry looked at her

ping you’re not used to, tell me, alright?”
“About you coming home, your dad and I decided not to announce it just yet, Cherry said to her.
She was concerned because, first, Matthew’s grandmother was in poor health, and her own parents were elderly, not able to deal with too much excitement. Second, they had a ton of distant relatives who would be constantly at their door if they found out. Third, if Yvonne’s identity became public, the media would hound her relentlessly, scrutinizing her every move and making her life uncomfortable. Cherry voiced her concerns “We’ll tell everyone when the time is right, okay?”
Yvonne didn’t expect her mother to bring this up and responded indifferently, “I don’t really care about that.”
Yvonne felt that the announcement of her return or a grand ceremony wasn’t the most important thing. As long as they were together as a family with one heart, that was what mattered
Cherry, relieved, looked at her understanding daughter and urged her to eat more. After she finished, they chatted for a bit until Yvonne’s phone rang, and Cherry left with the tray.
“I’m home” Christopher’s voice came through the phone.

Just keep them for when you need them, Christopher said, his voice dripping with affection. “How about I take you our for some fun tomorrow? Anywhere you’d like to go?”
I have to work, Yvonne said.
Christopher was surprised to hear that, “Summer job?”
“Kind of”
“Are your parents okay with it?”

She’d be working in the company they had given her.
“Where is it? I’ll drive you”
“No need. It’s close to my home.”
“Why do you have to work?” Christopher felt a bit pained. He thought maybe she didn’t have enough pocket money. But then he recalled that he’d given her a blank check for a surgery, so it probably wasn’t about the money.
“Just for fun. Nothing much to do in summer.” Otherwise, her parents would just give her money. She had no other options.
“Come hang out at my place.” Christopher’s voice was once again captivating. “It’s fun here.”
Yvonne didn’t respond.
Christopher added with his magnetic voice, “You can do whatever you like.”
Yvonne was at a loss for words.
I’m around. I can take care of you.
“No, thanks.”
“Think about it?” This was the first time in Christopher’s life that he had personally invited someone like this.

But Yvonne rejected it without hesitation. Thanks, but I already have a job.”
“Gotta have fun, right?”
“Yep.”
Then have fun for a couple of days, and if it’s not fun, come to me.”
Christopher didn’t want her to work a summer job outside because that meant he wouldn’t see her during those hours. He thought she hadn’t really entered society yet and didn’t know its complexities. He wondered what she would do if she was taken advantage of.
Early the next morning, Zachary, stepping into the office building, spotted his secretary, Marcus, hanging around like he’d been there for ages.
In a good moon, Zachary waved at him, saying, “Marcus, what’s got you in so early?”
“Mr. White, thank goodness you’re here.” Marcus looked stressed, almost ready to break down. “We’re in deep trouble. A bunch of companies called, saying they want to cut ties with us.
“Are the contracts expired?”
“No.”
Then is it about the profit–sharing? We can talk that over.”
“It’s worse. They’re saying it’s over for good. We’ve been blacklisted.”
Zachary stood there, shocked by the news Marcus brought.
“Why? What’s going on? Zachary was struggling to make sense of it. “Is it a pricing issue, or did they find other partners?”
