Chapter 8
The conference room fell dead silent.
Theo’s expression darkened in an instant.
“What the hell does this mean. Mr. Donovan?”
Before Axel could answer, the auctioneer rang the bell.
“Auction begins.”
What happened next left everyone speechless.
Theo was like a gambler who’d lost everything, raising his paddle and upping the price.
Completely ignoring his assistant’s pale face and frantic gestures.
“Mr. Maddox!” The assistant finally called out. “This
is
ay beyond what our mortgaged assets can handler”
But Theo ignored him.
All he saw was Amelia sitting across from him with her expression cold, not even glancing his way.
He kept bidding like crazy, even mortgaging three of Maddox Industries‘ subsidiaries.
Emily was green with envy in the audience while my dad and Brielle grinned like they just won the lotter
Until the auctioneer finally brought down the gavel:
“The winner of this stock auction–Mr. Axel Donovan.”
The room dropped into a deeper silence than before.
Then chaos erupted.
For the first time ever, Theo completely lost his composure, flipping the table over.
“Axel fucking Donovan, what’s this shit about stealing my wife?”
I held up my phone and played that recording from the wedding–him and my dad discussing the fake marriage certificate.
“Your legal wife is Emily Brooks.”
Theo whipped around to glare at Emily.
“You told her?”
“No, it wasn’t me!” Emily shook her head frantically, tears streaming down her face.
But she couldn’t hide her uneasy.
She looked desperately at our dad and Brielle for help, but Theo yanked her back.
The fury in his eyes could’ve burned her alive. “I felt sorry for you, and you fucking played me?”
My dad turned away from Emily and walked over with a huge smile to shake Axel’s hand.
Axel Donovan suddenly chuckled, “You’re thanking me a hit too soon.”
In the stunned silence, Nolan pulled out my mom’s sealed will and read it aloud:
“According to Article 7 of Mrs. Brooks‘ will: if the proxy shares are involved in any abnormal transactions, the trust relationship is automatically terminated.”
