Chapter 1
Chapter 1
My wife and I were both liars.
She told me she’d get over her first love–yet her phone’s filled with pictures of him.
I told her I’d never leave–but I was already planning a future without her.
A month ago, I tricked her into signing the divorce papers.
Today is the final day of our mandatory divorce cooling–off period.
Three hours left–I packed all my bags and booked a one–way flight out of the country.
Two hours left–I deleted every picture of us, left only the ones with me in them.
One hour left–I recorded one final video for her.
“Lena, this is the tenth year I’ve loved you.
And the first day I’m finally walking away.”
When I showed up to deliver the wedding contract to Lena Rhodes–right on time–I heard her chatting with a friend
in her office.
“Lena, Ethan’s flying back today.”
“And you’re still going through with this ceremony with Ryan?”
Lena gave a distracted “yeah” and kept glancing at her watch.
“He’s late,” she mumbled.
But I knew she wasn’t talking about me.
She was waiting for Ethan.
Today was the day her first love–Ethan–came back to the States.
Back then, when Ethan got engaged, she was heartbroken.
And in a moment of impulse, she married me instead.
Three days ago, Ethan finalized his divorce.
That night, Lena got blackout drunk.

And the next morning, she told me we should finally throw that long overdue wedding party.
She wasn’t doing it for me.
She just wanted to get Ethan’s attention.
Our marriage was just a prop in their love story.
When I stepped into her office, Lena didn’t even look up.
She just stuck her hand out.
“Wedding contract.”
I handed her the folder I’d prepared.
On the second–to–last page, I’d slipped in something extra.
The divorce agreement.
“There’s a couple extra clauses,” I said casually.
“Read through it if you’ve got time.”
But I’d picked this exact time for a reason.
Because I knew she wouldn’t bother.
Sure enough, she flipped straight to the last page.
“I have to go pick someone up. No time to go over this.”
Her voice was sharp, impatient.
But her eyes…. there was a softness there.
The coldness was for me.
The softness–for Ethan.
She signed in a rush and left without a second glance.
We’d been married five years.
Sure, she’d been kind to me before./
Just not often.
I kept hoping that if I loved her hard enough, she’d get used to me being there.
But even the press always called her “unmarried.”

The day than got divorced, 1ans came home with a rare mile on her fare.
She got so drunt she couldn’t stand.
And she smiled all night long.
Even when she looked at me.
She smiled.
That smile–one I’d begged to see for years–she gave away so easily now.
I stayed up taking care of her until past midnight.
When she finally passed out, I picked up her phone.
I typed in Ethan’s birthday as the passcode.
It unlocked instantly.
The photos app was nearly out of storage.
Every single photo was of him.
Not a single one of me.
Even our wedding photo–she’d photoshopped Ethan’s face over mine.
I remember the day we got our marriage license.
She refused to hold a wedding.
But she insisted on taking the wedding photos.
Now I knew why.
Right then, I realized:
These five years had run their course.
All that was left was the countdown.
One month.

That’s how long the divorce cooling period lasts.
And that’s all I had left of the wedding she promised to give me.
Exactly one month.
