Upside Down
Upside Down
~Lyra~
I knew I had messed up the second the words slipped out of my mouth. Or what. Do you have any idea how stupid that sounded, how reckless, how suicidal?
Because Damon stopped dead in his tracks the very moment I said it. His entire body stiffened beneath me, every muscle locking tight, like a predator that had just scented weakness in its prey.
He turned his head just enough for me to catch the sharp outline of his jaw and the way his lips parted like he was on the verge of snapping.
“You really want to test me, kitten?”
“You want to know what I will do if you keep running that filthy little mouth of yours?”
My wolf inside me screamed at me to back down, to swallow my pride, but I could not. I was trembling, tears still streaking my cheeks, but I could not stop myself.
My heart was hammering against my ribs and my body felt like it was on fire, and the worst part is that I did not even know if it was from fear or need.
I hated myself for it, hated the way my skin lit up under his voice, hated the way I was wet just from the way
he growled at me.
I swear I had never hated a man the way I hated Damon in that moment, because he did not care that I was screaming at the top of my lungs, he did not care that I was pounding on his back like I was trying to knock him over, he did not care that I was kicking my legs so wildly my shoes nearly flew off.
He just kept walking, his arm ironclad around my thighs, his other hand steady, carrying me like I weighed nothing, like my tantrum meant absolutely nothing.
And the worst part was that the more he ignored me, the louder I got, because I could not stop myself.
“Damon, I swear this is the most humiliating thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life! Do you even realize what you’re doing?
“Do you realize I am upside down right now, and my hair is all over the place, and I probably look insane?! mean, who even carries their girlfriend like this, Damon? What are you trying to prove?
“That you’re strong? That you’re Alpha? Congratulations, we all already knew that, you don’t have to throw me over your shoulder like I’m some prize you won at a carnival! Put me down! Do you hear me? Put me down right now!”
And then it happened.
We heard a woman’s voice.
“Damon,” she said, and the way she said it was enough for me to know. “Son, you are home. But who is this you brought with you on your shoulders?”
I froze. I actually stopped breathing. I could not move, could not even blink, because oh my Goddess, that
was his mother.
Upside Down
His actual mother, I was dangling upside down like some captured criminal and his mother was standing there, watching, probably judging me, probably hating me already. My face burned so hot I was sure steam was about to come out of my ears.
“Oh my God!” I shrieked, thrashing harder. “Damon, put me down right now, I am not meeting your mother like this! This is insane! Do you even have a brain? Do you even understand how humiliating this is for me?
“She probably thinks I am some random girl you dragged off the street. Do you know what she is going to think? She is going to think I am some slut you picked up in a bar, or worse, that I begged you to carry me like
this, which I did not!
“For the record, Mrs. Damon’s–Mother, I did not ask for this! He is insane, your son is insane, and I am so sorry you have to see me like this because I promise you I am not normally upside down when I meet people!”
I tried to push up on his back so I could at least see her face, but Damon’s hand pressed down harder on my thighs, pinning me. “Not now, Mum. We can discuss this tomorrow.”
Tomorrow? Tomorrow? Was he joking?
“Tomorrow?!” I yelled, pounding his back so hard my palms stung. “Are you insane? Tell her now, Damon! Tell her who I am! Do not just walk past your mother like this while I am literally dangling upside down like a sack
of potatoes!
“This is not normal! This is not okay! She deserves to know who I am, I deserve to be introduced properly, like a normal person, not like this! You are ruining my life, Damon, you are absolutely ruining my life!”
I could feel his grip tightening, his muscles hardening, and his voice dropped lower, more dangerous. “Kitten,
not another word.”
But I could not stop. I could not shut up. My wolf inside me was screaming at me to be silent, but I was too humiliated, too panicked, too caught up in the heat of the moment.
“Do not tell me not to speak! Do not silence me in front of your mother! Do you even hear yourself? I am a human being, Damon, I have a mouth, I have words, and I am going to use them because this is not fair!
“Your mother is literally right there and you are acting like this is nothing, like carrying me upside down is completely normal, but it is not! Nothing about this is normal! Tell her who I am right now or I swear I will scream until the whole house knows my name!”
His growl ripped through the hall, vibrating against my ribs. “Keep running that filthy little mouth of yours in front of my mother and I swear, tomorrow will not come before I deal with you first.”
I twisted on his shoulder, clawing at his back, my hair flying in every direction, and the words just poured out of me, louder and faster with every breath.
“Ma’am, please! Please, help me! I am begging you! Do you see what your son is doing to me? He is carrying me like I am a bag of groceries! I swear I did not agree to this, I am not a volunteer in some circus act! I have legs, I can walk, I promise I know how to walk on my own two feet.
“He is kidnapping me in your own house, right in front of you! You are his mother, aren’t you supposed to stop him? Please, I am not crazy, I am not usually upside down like this, I swear I am a very respectable person when I am right side up!”
Damon’s grip on me tightened like steel, but I was too far gone to stop.

Upaids Down
I was flailing my arms, kicking my legs, shrieking like a banshee because if anyone was going to save me from this humiliation, it had to be his mother.
“I am begging you, ma’am, I am too young to die of embarrassment. I am only eighteen, I have a whole life ahead of me, and if this continues I will not survive it. Your son is insane! He is crazy! Do you see this? Argh! Your son is going to kill me with humiliation! Please tell him to put me down before my brain falls out of my head from all the blood rushing this way!”
And then I heard it. The most glorious, heavenly words I had ever heard in my entire life, delivered in the calmest, most motherly voice that made me want to cry with joy.
“Damon, child, drop the girl down.”
I froze for half a second and then screamed like I had just won the lottery. “Yes! Thank you, ma’am! Thank you, Goddess bless you, you are the only sane person in this house! Do you hear that, Damon?
“Your mother said drop me down! She is your mother, you cannot disobey her, so put me down right now before I combust into flames of shame and regret. Please, please, please, I beg you, let me down so I can look like a human being again instead of an upside down chicken!”
Damon growled deep in his chest, and I could feel the vibration against my stomach. He muttered through clenched teeth, his voice rough with irritation. “Mum, not now.”
“Not now?” I screamed again, pounding his back with my fists. “What do you mean not now? She is your mother! She literally told you to drop me down!
“Are you insane? Do you want to get cursed for disobedience? Damon, put me down! She outranks you! She created you! The least you can do is listen to her and put your poor, humiliated girlfriend down before I die right here on your shoulder!”
His mother’s voice came again, firmer this time. “Damon. Drop. The. Girl.”
I gasped dramatically, clinging to his back as if my life depended on it. “Did you hear that? She said it again! I told you, Damon, you cannot fight your mother. No wolf in the world can fight his mother. It is like, a universal law! Please just put me down before she gets angry and I get blamed for it because you refuse to listen!”
I was practically bouncing with hope when his mother told him again to drop me down. I thought for sure I
was saved. I thought he would listen, that he would finally obey the one person in the world no son ever dares
disobey.
But Damon only growled low in his chest, the sound making my stomach clench, and he answered her without even breaking his stride.
“No, Mum.
“Arghhhh!?” I screamed, my voice cracking so hard it echoed off the walls. “What do you mean no? You cannot just tell your mother ‘tomorrow.‘ She literally told you to put me down!
“Do you even hear yourself? Oh my God, I cannot believe you! Do you know how many boys in this world would be struck dead on the spot for ignoring their mothers like this?
But Damon did not listen. He carried me up the staircase with the same calm, powerful strides, my body bouncing against his shoulder while I kept thrashing and ranting like some possessed child.
He did not say a word until we reached the top of the stairs. He shoved the bedroom door open with his

shoulder, strode inside, and then dropped me down on the bed like I was nothing
11 gasped, sprawling on the sheets with my hair a mess, my face red, my chest heaving. Before I could even scramble up, he shut the door behind him with a slam and turned the lock with a click.
My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear my own thoughts when his shadow fell over me. He took one step closer.
“You think my mother will save you? Cute.”
