Chapter 45 How Is She Still a Lark?
A cold shiver ran through Azalea’s chest. She knew Matthias never backed down from his threats. The four Larks guys weren’t easy to mess with either. Cassius might be tough as their leader, but Matthias was crazier and way more ruthless.
Years locked in the lab had drained Matthias of most of his humanity. He didn’t care much about his family except Sydney. He was obsessed with her.
What can I do now? Should I just give in?
Right then, Azalea hated her own weakness more than anything.
Meanwhile, Bastian looked at Sydney, who was inside the car with him. Where is Matthias?
Under Bastian’s sharp stare, Sydney looked away, feeling guilty.
His heart fell. “Turn the car around,” Bastian told the driver urgently.
Outside the arena, Hubert had already figured something was off after waiting too long for the GOD
team’s car.
“Ace, take the others and head to the stadium fast.
“Douglas, come with me to the underground garage.”
After the call, Hubert sped toward the underground garage without wasting time.
“I’ll do it,” Azalea said through gritted teeth. Saying yes to Matthias might only ruin her–but what did it matter? She didn’t plan to keep playing in the tournament anyway.
If she said no, though, Lachlan and the others would really be in trouble. They could win titles later, as long as they got out of this.
Only then did Matthias look a little pleased she agreed. He pulled out his phone and held it up. “Record your statement. If no news leaks by tomorrow, I’ll help you.”
Her hands shook as she took the phone and tapped the recording app.
“I-”
“I was wondering why you took so long.” A familiar, slightly amused cold voice rang out. Hubert stepped forward, his eyes sharp as ice.
He glanced at the bodyguards. “Dr./Lark, what’s going on? Did my little nephew cross you?”
There was still some humor in his voice, but then his face darkened. “Or are you here with the Larks to start trouble? Picking on my kid?”
The way he said “kid” was weird. Not that Azalea was self–centered, but she felt like it was aimed at her.
She looked at Hubert a few more times, feeling suspicious. Why is he so protective of me?
Wylie tried to hide a smirk. Ha, this old fart!
The bodyguards didn’t move again. Instead, they looked to Matthias for orders.
Grinding his teeth, Matthias cursed inside.
I was so close to finishing this. Talk about “great” timing.
His gaze shifted, and with a wave, Matthias told the guards to back off. “You can take Wylie away. But Azalea’s not going with you.”
No matter what, she needs to come with me, and I’ll figure out what to do with her later.
His hand tightened on Azalea’s wrist, leaving a red mark on her pale skin.
Matthias didn’t care whether he hurt Azalea. His only goal was to keep her here today.
Unlike Cassius, he wouldn’t play games. Azalea was a Lark. There was no way he’d let Hubert have her.
Hubert stood firm. “I don’t think you understand me. I’m taking everyone here with me, and I’ll settle all scores later.”
Matthias’s face turned dark. After a pause, a cold, humorless laugh came out.
Hubert really thinks he’s something, huh? An outsider, trying to lecture me about my own sister?
“Mr. Lennox, Azalea is a Lark,” Matthias said coldly, his voice low and threatening, like two beasts growling.
Douglas laughed out loud. Funny. I haven’t heard anyone threaten Hubert in years. They’d been friends a long time, so Douglas could tell just how mad Hubert was now.
He studied Matthias for a moment. Word is Matthias is a lab rat, a researcher. I wonder how tough he really is and how many of Hubert’s punches he can take.
Back when Hubert’s brother was around, he seemed cold and distant, but actually, he was the wildest of the group, until the trouble hit the Lennoxes and he cooled down a little.
“She’s still a Lark? Is her last name Lark, or is she still registered under your household? Didn’t she sign papers cutting all ties?” Hubert looked genuinely confused. Every word was like a knife right into Matthias’s pride.
“How is she still a Lark?”
Azalea, still held tightly by Matthias, wanted to applaud. Perfect.
These guys from the Larks keep demanding she “come home,” like some kind of madman, when she’s cut all ties with them. They’re not even her family!
While they argued, Ace finally showed up with backup. The Lennox bodyguards stepped forward, forming a protective line behind Hubert.
Now that help had arrived, Hubert wasn’t polite anymore. All the earlier talk was just to buy time. If things got physical, he couldn’t promise Azalea’s safety otherwise.
