But that was exactly why Bastian was so desperate to get Azalea back. He was scared Hubert might have some dark plan to hurt her.
They rode back to the Larks‘ residence in silence.
As soon as Matthias got out of the car, he saw Sydney waiting by the door, and his heart softened right away. “Silly, why are you standing out here in the cold at night? Go back in and get some rest.”
Sydney’s face went pale when she saw the bruises on his face. Her voice shook with tears as she ran into Matthias’s arms. “Matthias, what happened? Who did this? Was it Azalea? How could she hit you?”
It wasn’t exactly Azalea, but close enough.
When Matthias heard Sydney say that, all the anger he had been holding back flared up again.
Matthias sneered coldly inside. I guess Azalea’s really lost it. There’s nothing she won’t do now.
Just then, the family doctor arrived. Matthias didn’t want Sydney to see how bad his injuries really were, so he calmed her down and told her to rest.
He lay back on the living room sofa, his shirt pulled up, the bruises on his waist and stomach looking dark and swollen. It was pretty painful to see.
The doctor rubbed ointment on the wounds.
Bastian watched quietly, his expression hard to read. He wasn’t worried about Matthias. No, his real concern was Azalea. If Hubert was willing to hit Matthias that hard, Azalea’s injuries must be worse.
“Matthias, Azalea is still family,” Bastian said more gently. “You don’t have to like her, but do you really have to be this hostile?”
He didn’t expect the family to treat Azalea like they did Sydney, but this level of hatred wasn’t necessary.
And then there were the things Sydney had said earlier….
After thinking for a moment, Bastian finally spoke up. “Matthias, Sydney isn’t as innocent as you think.” He shared everything he and Cassius had found out.
“And about today, at the gym, did you go looking for Sydney, and then she came to you crying?” Knowing Matthias’s temper, Bastian figured if Sydney hadn’t shown upset, Matthias wouldn’t have gone out of his way to make trouble for Azalea.
Bastian hoped his words would at least make Matthias more cautious about Sydney, even if he couldn’t immediately see Azalea’s good side. But instead, Matthias got mad at him.
Lying back on the sofa, Matthias suddenly sat up and punched Bastian right in the face. “Bastian, haven’t I told you never to talk bad about Sydney in front of me? Lbet Azalea’s the one who’s got you brainwashed, defending her like this!

Matthias was furious. He couldn’t believe those words came from Bastian. “I think you’re the one blinded by that little brat.”

Bastian’s eyes went wide in shock. Usually the calmest one, even he looked tense, veins popping on his temples. “What nonsense are you talking about?
“I think Hubert did you a favor–knocking some sense into you with those punches.” It was hard to believe this unreasonable guy was the same Matthias known for his cool head and sharp mind.
But Matthias became even more unreasonable. “If you really consider yourself Sydney’s brother, then buy the rest of Azalea’s team for yourself and let’s see if she can still win a championship all alone.”
He said it like Bastian not doing it was a crime.
Bastian had no words. He didn’t get why Matthias was so desperate to protect Sydney at all costs when she had lost the game she was paid to play.
“Hey, what’s going on here? I just got back from wrapping up and already I hear you two fighting?” Skyler showed up, dragging his suitcase, amused by the scene.

Seeing Skyler, Matthias quickly told him about the day and scolded Bastian. “Skyler, tell me, is Bastian nuts or what?”
Skyler, the smooth talker of the group, smiled and leaned toward Matthias. “Don’t be mad, Matthias. If you want Bastian to fire his whole team, he definitely won’t like it. It’s like if Cassius wanted you to quit your lab and come back to the company–would you be happy?”
With just a few words, Skyler summed up Bastian’s frustration as feeling like his territory was being taken over. Before Bastian could argue otherwise, Skyler cut him off. “Bastian, come on. Matthias cares about Sydney the most. Of course, he’s upset when she gets hurt. You could try being a bit more helpful.”
After that, the tension between the two men faded fast. “It’s not that complicated,” Skyler went on casually. “Azalea’s a girl playing esports, and there’s bound to be tons of gossip. Just let the fans pressure her.
“Even if she’s fine with it, the officials can’t just let it slide.”
