Chapter 49 Didn’t Want Anyone Else Touching Her
Now that Azalea had found her own family, Hubert saw little reason to reveal who he truly was.
For now, Hubert still wasn’t ready to tell her the truth. It wasn’t because he feared she’d take advantage. After spending time with her, he was sure she wasn’t that kind of person. Even though she seemed distant and kept to herself, she never forgot those who treated her well.
Hubert just didn’t want Azalea to carry any extra weight on her shoulders.
Azalea wanted to ask more, but then Hubert said something that made her cheeks turn bright red.
“Roll up your shirt and lie down. I need to put some medicine on you.”
What?
Roll up what?
My shirt?
She froze, unsure what to do. Hubert moved closer with the ointment. “What’s the matter? You’re not going to let me put the medicine on?”
But this isn’t a question of applying medicine or not! –
My injury is on my back, so putting on ointment means I’ll have to show my upper body. The back isn’t so embarrassing, but still…
“I can do it myself. No need to bother you,” Azalea said, reaching for the ointment, but Hubert stopped her with a raised hand.
“Can you literally bend over backward?” Hubert, frowned, clearly not approving. “How are you going to put medicine on your own back?”
But that doesn’t mean I should let him do it!
-Azalea’s mind screamed no. There’s no way I can bare my upper body in front of an adult man and let him apply medicine!
Getting impatient, Hubert pressed her down on the bed with one hand, cold spreading over her lower back as he lifted her shirt. “Quit messing around. I won’t look. Carla isn’t here tonight. I’ll leave as soon as I’m done.”
He knew exactly what Azalea was worried about. Being careful wasn’t a bad thing, but the situation left no choice. If not him, then the family doctor or Langdon would have to do it.
He actually didn’t want anyone else touching her.
Azalea had practically grown up under his watchful eye; she was almost like a daughter to him. Putting ointment on her wasn’t crossing any lines.
The only other kid he saw regularly was Wylie. Seeing it that way, Hubert figured it was alright.

His tone was firm. Azalea figured she wouldn’t be able to get out of this.
“W–wait a second!” Azalea’s cars burned as she looked away, shy now, her voice much softer. “Turn around first. I’ll do it myself.”
As Hubert watched the girl pinned beneath his hand, his heart skipped a beat. He felt ashamed noticing a strange stirring inside him. Like fire licking his skin, he quickly pulled his hand back and turned away awkwardly. “Do it yourself.”
His eyes darkened as he rubbed his cuff irritably. Damn, am I really turning into some kind of beast?
“I’m done.” Her quiet, trembli smooth and pale.
voice came from behind him. When Hubert turned, he saw Azalea’s back,
A patch of bruises marred her skin, strangely adding a fragile kind of beauty to the delicate canvas.
was someone else, maybe he’d have been curious enough to Hubert’s eyes grew even darker. If it appreciate the sight. Not that he was a saint anyway.
But when he saw those wounds on Azalea, his face went dark instantly. His muscles tensed, his gaze sharp as ice, his anger obvious.
His burning stare made Azalea feel like needles were piercing her. She couldn’t see his face from where she lay and shivered. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” His tone was unreadable. A soft rustle followed, then a cool feeling on her back as he spread the herbal ointment. It filled the room with a faint scent.
She had to admit, the ointment worked better than she expected. The burning pain eased under the cool relief, and she almost moaned softly.
As she clenched her teeth, the blush on her only grew deeper instead of fading.

Hubert’s rough fingers moved over her back, and the touch was maddeningly intimate.
The embarrassment flushed from her ears to her neck, climbing to her cheeks, turning her face bright red -like a–lobster fresh from boiling water.
While applying the ointment, Hubert noticed more than just bruises caused by Matthias. Her back was covered with faint scars, soft pink lines that blended in unless you looked close.
When he finished, Hubert finally asked, “How did you get these scars?”
Azalea quickly pulled her shirt down, brushing it off like it didn’t matter. “When I was at the Larks, messing up meant punishment. After enough times, even medical treatments couldn’t clear the scars.” “Cassius did that?” Hubert remembered their fight outside the school, his eyes darkening.
“No, not him. Wesley and Ivy left these.”
She sounded casual, like it was small talk.
Hubert nodded and straightened her blanket, then joked, “Maybe someday you should fight back, you know?”
