Chapter 311
Maggie thought for a moment, then stood up. “I’ll tell you later. I need to step out and make a phone call first.”
With that, she politely greeted Professor Liam and the others then turned and walked out of the private room with her phone in hand.
Watching her retreating figure, Johnny finally came back to his senses. In an instant, his eyes widened in disbelief.
He had indeed wondered, at a banquet last year, whether there was something going on between Maggie and Jimmy after seeing the two of them dancing together.
But after that event, there should’ve been no further contact between them. So how could-
Hearing Johnny’s words, Glen instinctively glanced over at Maggie.
He didn’t know who Jimmy was.
But when he looked over and caught that fleeting trace of discomfort on her face, his gut immediately told him something was off. Not to mention, Johnny’s reaction only confirmed his suspicions.
So this Jimmy–he and Maggie, could it be that they-
Franklin did know Jimmy.
After hearing Johnny’s comment, he casually glanced over at Maggie as well. Initially, he had planned to look away immediately after a cursory glance.
But the moment he caught the subtle change in her expression, he paused, eyes following her thoughtfully as she left
the room.
Once Maggie exited the private room, she answered the call. Just as she was about to speak, Jimmy’s voice came through first.
“I thought you weren’t going to answer my calls anymore.”
Because of her good looks, Maggie had basically been confessed to by others ever since she was a teenager.
She was no stranger to romantic advances from men.
However, after gettin
married and having a child, her social circle shifted. On top of that, she’d never hidden her marital status at work. So over the past few years, very few people had confessed to her.
She and Jimmy could be considered half–friends. But given that she wasn’t officially divorced from Franklin yet, his recent confession–and now this call–did make her feel a little awkward.

She was just about to respond when Jimmy spoke again.
“After we last met, I actually gave a lot of thought to what I told you. At the time, even I thought it was just a moment. of impulse.
“But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it wasn‘ impulsive at all. I had already developed feelings for you without even realizing it. What I said that day–those were the truest thoughts buried deep inside me. I really do like you.”
Maggie had already guessed the purpose of his call when she saw his name on the screen.
But she hadn’t expected him to say this much.
Jimmy’s voice was steady, calm, and sincere. He spoke with the conviction of someone who had thought long and hard before making a decision.
Before she could respond, he continued, “Last time you said you’d been married. Been married, not are married. Can I take that to mean there are problems in your marriage or that maybe you’re already divorced? So–could you tell me your current marital status?”
There was no pressure in his tone, and when he asked this last question, his voice was even tinged with a gentle warmth.
Jimmy had always made a good impression on her.
He was respectful and earnest, asking only for clarity.
Maggie had never been someone who could turn away from sincerity with cruelty.
She answered truthfully, “I just filed for divorce today, but it’s not finalized yet.”
“You have to wait out the cooling–off period before it becomes official?”
“Yeah.”
Jimmy chuckled. “Then it looks like I’ve got pretty good timing.”
“It’s not that…” Maggie grew even more flustered. After saying that softly, she added. “Thank you for liking me, but
I-”
“I know.” Jimmy gently cut her off.
Even his interruptions were soft.
“I know what you’re trying to say. You don’t want to jump into a new relationship so soon. Maybe you’ve never even considered me that way. In fact, you probably don’t have any feelings for me at all right now.”
Chapter 311
Every word hit the nail on the head. Maggie was momentarily speechless.
Then Jimmy’s voice came through the phone again.
“I understand all of that. But I don’t mind. I can wait.”
Maggie snapped back to her senses. She thought of Isabella and was about to mention her child, but once again, Jimmy beat her to it.
“You said you’ve been married. So I figured you might also have a child. I’ve thought about that, too. And my answer is still the same.”
“That’s why–I hope I can be the first in line to pursue you. And if you ever decide to start a new relationship after. your divorce, I hope I’ll be the first one you consider.”
Maggie had been confessed to by many people in her life.
But never like this.
She still hadn’t responded when Jimmy’s voice came again, warm as ever.
“Where are you right now? Have you eaten? I just got back into the city. Can I invite you dinner?”
