Chapter 25
“I don’t think I have much of a say in this–it’s up to Steven,” Kaylee replied with a polite. smile, deftly deflecting the question back to him.
She had heard from Arthur that Steven was even more of a workaholic than he was, wholly
devoted to his career with no intention of pursuing romance.
If Vincent had never been part of the picture, maybe she would’ve considered it. After all, who wouldn’t be tempted by a handsome and wealthy man?
But now, she had no real interest in love, at least not at the moment.
Steven lifted his head and spoke calmly, “I don’t have plans in that direction for now. I wouldn’t want to waste Kaylee’s time. As for the childhood betrothal, let’s just let it go.”
Kaylee couldn’t help but curl her lips into a faint smile. She had guessed correctly–Steven wouldn’t agree.
Bob’s face immediately darkened, but Steven’s mother, Ella, gently held him back to prevent an outburst. The atmosphere in the private dining room, however, became noticeably less cheerful.
Robert, noticing the tension, chuckled and said, “Young people these days value freedom in their relationships. Ultimately, it’s their choice.”
Bob didn’t say much more, and after some persuasion from Robert, the mood around the
table lightened again.
When the gathering ended, Kaylee, trailing behind the group, called out to Steven.
“Steven, thank you for yesterday.”
No matter what, she was grateful for his help. Without him stepping in, she didn’t know how long Vincent would have continued to pester her.
Steven’s face remained expressionless. “It was nothing. Next time, just be more careful about the people you trust.”
with that, he turned and walked away.
He seemed cold, and his words were no warmer. Kaylee couldn’t imagine him as the b who had once held her as a baby.
On the way home, Robert apologized to Kaylee,
“Kaylee, what happened today was my fault. Since Steven hadn’t been back in so long, wed completely forgotten about the arrangement, Bob only brought it up today, and that’s when
emembered.”
Margot looked at her daughter nervously, worried that they had mishandled the situation and left her upset.
Seeing her parents‘ concern, Kaylee reassured them, “It’s fine. I’m just not thinking about relationships right now, let alone marriage,”
“Besides, Steven doesn’t seem interested either. It might just fizzle out on its own.”
Since they hadn’t intentionally kept it from her, she didn’t see a reason to be upset.
Margot took Kaylee’s hand and said earnestly, “Good. If you’re not willing, your father and I won’t force you. We’ll never use our daughter as a tool for some marriage alliance.”
“Exactly!
Robert and Arthur chimed in simultaneously,
Kaylee looked at her loving family and smiled. With such a supportive home, what more
could she ask for?
For the next few days, Kaylee stayed at home, either watching TV with her mother or exploring the sprawling estate.
The house was so vast it took her a while to discover everything: a three–story arcadeza two–story gym, a private cinema, and even a snow room for cooling off in the summer with an automatic ice–maker…
Her first chance to leave the house came when she had to deliver some documents to Robert’s company.
On her way back, however, she ran into Vincent.

At that moment, she fully understood the phrase “haunted by a ghost”
When she loved him, he was always busy–busy with the lab, busy with Alina. Now that she no longer loved him, he suddenly had all the time in the world.
People truly were strange creatures,
Vincent, holding a bouquet of lilies, hurried toward her.
Kaylee, these are your favorite lilies. I bought them expecially for you. Didn’t we promise to get married after graduation?”
“Now, I’ve bought a Dior diamond ring–for you, for the rest of my life.”
With those words, he knelt on one knee and pulled out a ring
“Kaylee, will you marry me?”
