When I got home, I found everyone was already there.
My in–laws and my sister–in–law. Hali.
The whole family was seated on the sofa, their faces serious, as if discussing somehing
mportant.
“Why is everyone here? You didn’t even let me know. I won’t have time to buy gra
and cook now.”
I forced a smile as I spoke.
My mother–in–law glanced at me, dabbed her eyes with a tissue, and then took
“Avni… oh, sigh…”
My heart skipped a beat. Could it be that they already knew?
My husband, Davon Smith, looked at me gravely. “Avni, let’s get a divorce.”
“Why?”
I opened my mouth wide, gazing at him with hurt.

He handed me a piece of paper. “I have late–stage cancer. There’s no hope for treatment. I
don’t want to burden you.”
My body swayed, nearly collapsing, but Davon was quick to catch me.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I grabbed his hand tightly, my other hand trembling, still holding the diagnosis report.
“Can’t you treat it? You’re still so young, your career is just taking off. Rainie can’t be
without her father.”
At the mention of Rainie, Davon’s eyes flashed with a complicated emotion, quickly replaced by determination.
