“Mrs. Miller, these are photos of your husband with his mistresses, the third and fourth. Here are the hotel check–in records and bank transfer details.
He’s also arranged to meet me at 7 PM tonight, bringing flowers. If you go now, he won’t suspect a thing.”
The elegant woman in front of me looked at the photos and documents I had placed on the table, and had to admit the truth–her usually obedient husband had been cheating on her.
Mrs. Miller wasn’t like my usual clients who would become hysterical upon learning the
truth.
Instead, she calmly sipped her coffee, then took off her ring and pulled a card from her bag.
“I should have known he had a problem. Ms. Clark, tell me–does a man really lose control
over his lower half once he has money?”
“Mrs. Miller, money can make anyone do anything. But how can you be sure it’s him changing, and not that this was always his nature?
There are good men in the world, but those who stay faithful when wealth is involved are few and far between. Besides, if you hadn’t sensed something, would you have come to ask
me to do this for you?”
Mrs. Miller paused, stunned for a moment, before bursting into laughter.
“Ms. Clark, you’re very smart. I hope you don’t follow the same path I did.”
“Mrs. Miller, you don’t need to worry too much about this.”
Mrs. Miller looked up at the window, seemingly lost in thought for a long time. Finally, she sighed and said, “I’ve known this would happen for a while, but I didn’t expect him to change so quickly. Now, it feels like all the years I’ve put in were a joke.”
She handed me the card from the table.
“This is the final payment, the password is eight eights.”

I took the card and placed it carefully in my bag.
“What do you plan to do with your husband?”

“He’s been able to build the company like this with the protection of my family.
Hmph, relying on my wealth while keeping mistresses on the side–now that we have solid
evidence, I’ll make sure he leaves with nothing. The company will be in my name.”
Then I wish Mrs. Miller success.”
“Ms. Clark, it’s been a pleasure working with you.”
“Likewise.”
My clients are usually either rich or influential, paying a high price to have me investigate
their partners.
They always want to test whether their significant others can remain faithful when tempted
by someone like me.
But more often than not, they’ve already sensed problems in the relationship, and they hire
me as an intermediary so they can end things more smoothly.
They use the evidence I gather to ensure their partner has no chance of fighting back.
When I got home, the room was completely dark. I thought Austin Walker had already gone
to bed.
I quietly removed my shoes and jacket, planning to get ready for bed, when suddenly the lights flicked on, blinding me for a moment. After a while, I saw Austin standing in front of me, holding a cake with lit candles.
“Happy anniversary, Angela.”
“Is today our tenth anniversary?”
“Yeah, I thought you’d forgotten since you’ve been busy with work. Come, eat the cake.”
A warm feeling spread in my heart. I hadn’t expected Austin to remember our anniversary.

We’d been together since we were sixteen, and now I was nearly thirty. Time really did fly.
I worried that Austin might not have eaten because he was busy preparing the surprise.
“Did you eat yet?”
“I was waiting for you to eat with me.”
“You’re so thoughtful.”
I grabbed my jacket, intending to change into my pajamas, but he suddenly grabbed my
arm and covered my eyes.
“Austin, what are you doing?”
“Why go to the room? I still have a surprise for you. Turn around, close your eyes, and I’ll
get it for you. Don’t peek.”
I thought his cautiousness was adorable, so I agreed without hesitation.
Austin let go of my arm, and I obediently closed my eyes, not peeking. The sound of the door lock turning reached my ears, followed by the door opening, and after a brief pause, it closed again.
“Okay, Angela, you can open your eyes now.”
I slowly opened my eyes and turned around.
“Well, do you like it?”
He pulled out a necklace. I was surprised, but also confused.
“I like it, but why did you go through the trouble of opening the door to get it?”
“I had the delivery guy bring it. I had this necklace custom–made a while ago, and I thought
I wouldn’t get it in time…”
I didn’t doubt him, and took the necklace to admire it, only to notice a small diamond was missing. It wasn’t very noticeable, but it did look a bit odd.

“Isn’t this broken?”
Austin’s expression changed, and he quickly asked, “Where? Let me see… Oh, it really is. Do you want me to talk to the seller about it?”
I thought about the trouble it would cause to return it and how the replacement might take months. I shook my head.
“It’s fine. It’s just a small issue. I’m happy enough that you got me this gift.”
I took a bite of the cake and asked him to help me put on the necklace. However, the necklace was a bit tight around my neck. Austin noticed and frowned slightly, loosening it
before I could swallow the last bite of my cake.
“Don’t buy from this store next time. They’ve got more problems than just this one.”
“Mm, next time I’ll get you one from somewhere else.”
