Chapter 7
The next time I saw Sophie, her complexion had improved significantly, and her figure was
no longer as thin and withered. She seemed to have returned to the confident and admired
beauty she was in college.
After she told me about the downfall of Thomas and Lillian, I felt much better.
I also learned that Sophie had become the jewelry designer she had always wanted to be. Although she was still just an assistant at the company, everything seemed to be moving in
the right direction.
Because of this event, I decided to take some time off, which also gave me the perfect opportunity to spend more time with Austin. I called him.
“What’s up, Angela?”
“Do you have time tomorrow? How about we go to an amusement park?”
“Deciding to take a break?”
“Yeah, it’s been a while since we hung out together. How about a date?”
“Alright, I’ll take a leave.”
That day, I received a rare commission–a male client. I met him at the agreed location.
“What do you need?”
“Well, here’s the thing: My wife and I have been married for a month. We grew up together, and she helped me build everything from scratch.
We’re doing well now, but recently I keep noticing that she’s been smiling at her phone a lot and going on more business trips.
A few months ago, I found a new dress she bought–one that I’ve never seen before. It’s not something I bought her, and she didn’t buy it herself either. I want you to help me see if she’s been cheating on me.”

“Okay, first, pay me.”
The man promptly transferred the money into my account.
“Time isn’t urgent. Just make sure you get proof of her affair.”
I added him to my contact list, and he sent me his wife’s basic details. After scanning the
information briefly, I had a rough idea of the direction I’d take.
When I got home, I saw Austin already in the kitchen, wearing an apron and preparing his
specialty. He heard me open the door, put down the kitchen tools, and looked at me with a
smile.
“You’re back?”
“Mm, it smells so good. What are you making?”
I moved up behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist and resting my head against
his back, greedily inhaling the scent of him.
He turned around and ruffled my hair.
“Grilled fish, a new recipe I learned. Want to try?”
Upon hearing that, I relaxed my hands and looked up at him.
“Austin, I don’t like fish.”
Austin clearly forgot this, his movements faltering as he looked somewhat awkward.
“Oops… I forgot, Angela. How about this–I’ll eat the fish and make you something else?”
“No need, it smells delicious. If you make something else, I’ll be starving by the time it’s
ready. Let’s just go out to eat, okay?”
Austin looked hesitant.
“It’d be a waste to throw away the fish. How about this? A college student just moved in next door, and he mostly orders takeout. I’ll give him this fish, so it doesn’t go to waste.”

“When did you get so familiar with the neighbor?”
“Well, when you weren’t home, I saw him moving in, so I helped him out. That’s how we got
to know each other.”
I studied Austin’s expression but didn’t notice anything suspicious. I looped my arm through his and said, “Alright, let’s go together.”
“Okay.”
He didn’t object and took off his apron before heading to knock on the neighbor’s door.
After a while, a guy wearing a gray coat and flip–flops came out, looking like he had just
woken up with messy hair.
“Reed, this is the fish I just made. My girlfriend doesn’t like fish, and I forgot. It’d be a waste
to throw it away, so I thought I’d give it to you. I’m guessing you haven’t had dinner yet,
right?”
Reed was delighted to take the fish, his eyes suddenly wide open, which had been half–closed just moments ago.
“Thanks, Austin. Perfect timing, just woke up and ready to eat.”
Austin nodded and said, “Enjoy. We’ll be out now.”
“Got it, take care.”
As we left, I casually glanced inside Reed’s apartment and noticed a pair of women’s shoes
besides his flip–flops, possibly belonging to his girlfriend.
We arrived at a French restaurant. I had only eaten a few bites when a woman in a black
mermaid dress came up to me, smiling warmly.
“Mr. Walker, I knew it was you!”
