As a major shareholder in the hospital, I had the director’s contact information on my phone,
Opening the app, I sent him a message.
“Please check on Ethan Yates patient, Hannie. Send me her medical record. I heard she has the same condition as my daughter, and I want to look into it.”
The reply came swiftly, and within minutes, a complete patient record appeared on my phone.
Using that information, I reached out to a friend to investigate Claire.
No sooner had I sent the request than the hospital called.
“Ms. Stewart, are you and Dr. Yates confirming the donation? Thank you so much! Hannie’s mother sends her deepest gratitude!”
“If it weren’t for Dr. Yates this past year, Hannie wouldn’t have been able to afford her hospital stay. You two are so kind–you’ll surely be blessed!”
“Dr. Yates will even represent our hospital at a medical conference the day after tomorrow to discuss surgery plans for this illness. Dedicated doctors like him are so rare these days.”
I frowned in confusion.
“Ethan has been paying for that child’s hospital bills this past year?”

“Yes, her biological father is apparently in prison, but he’s supposed to be released soon. It’s tragic…”
Hanging up, I immediately received a message from Fihán,
“Darling, are you at the office? It’s forecast to rain today, don’t forget your umbrella. I’d worry otherwise,”
“Call me if you need anything, Love, your husband.”
To avoid arousing suspicion, I suppressed my rage and replied in my usual tone.
“I’m here. Busy with social events today. Don’t forget to eat. Your health is as important as
your work.”
He responded with a heart emoji and, as if to reassure me, sent a photo of himself in the
clinic.
The hospital announcement system was audible in the live photo.
Unfortunately for him, I no longer cared about his long hours or stress.
These performative gestures were likely just to lower my guard while he fooled around in the hospital.
The friend investigating Claire soon sent back a document and a voice message.
“Lila, what’s going on? How are you involved with a woman like this? Take my advice and cut ties now. She’s not one to mess with–be careful, or she’ll ruin you.”
Puzzled, I opened the document and understood his warning.
Claire’s incarcerated husband had been convicted of manslaughter after accidentally killing her lover in a fit of rage during an affair.
The report listed every man Claire had been involved with over the years, all successful in their respective fields–just like Ethan.
Clearly, Ethan was still in the dark about all of this.
Chapter 3
I spent the entire day organizing evidence of his affair.
That night, I pretended nothing was wrong when I returned home, not wanting to alarm
him.
By the time my lawyer sent over the divorce papers, Ethan still hadn’t come back.
All he left was a message:
Darling, I have a medical conference in another city the day after tomorrow. Working late on à proposal tonight, so I’ll sleep at the office. Don’t wait up; rest early.”
I tested the waters with a question: “Still no news about the kidney donor for our daughter? Isn’t your hospital supposed to be top–notch?”
In the past, he’d only tell me to be patient.
This time, guilt made him stammer through a long–winded explanation.
I listened with a cold smile, ending the call with feigned resignation.
“Alright. But please, prioritize our daughter’s surgery once a donor is found.”
“Of course, it’s always on my mind.”
The next day, he had appointments and couldn’t come home.
That evening, he claimed to be finalizing the proposal and checked into a hotel in the other
city.
I knew he’d use this opportunity to take that woman and her daughter on a trip.
I wasn’t idle either.
I contacted a friend working in the prison system, confirmed Claire’s husband’s release date, and sent him the hotel address.
A good show always needs a heavyweight guest.
