Chapter 9
One night was enough for many things to happen.
For instance, Ethan was fired from his job.
He became a pariah in the medical field.
Patients from his hospital had all transferred out.
By morning, the hospital was an empty shell.
Outside, only angry shouts from the public remained.
.
The once–pristine white walls of the hospital were smeared with red paint, glaring and eerie.
Banners demanding justice from patient families hung at the entrance, and even the security guards had fled.
Reporters stood at the gates, broadcasting live updates, with the live stream breaking viewership records.
The comments were filled with endless insults directed at Ethan.
I turned off my phone and escorted my daughter to the operating room.
“Mommy, I’m scared…”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. It’ll be over soon, and it won’t hurt. Mommy will be right outside, waiting for you.”
m
It took a while to calm her down. When the operating light finally turned on, my heart clenched tightly.
My phone buzzed several times before I noticed the home security system had triggered an alarm.
I had already deleted Ethan’s fingerprints and identity from the system, but he had still found a way in.

Chapter 5
Unable to leave my daughter, I monitored his actions through the surveillance feed
He first dug out the first aid kit to disinfect his wounds.
Then he sat on the couch, chain–smoking cigarette after cigarette.
When the cigarettes ran out, he lost control and smashed everything in the house, turning our cozy home into a disaster zone.
mmediately called the police.
Meanwhile, he tried calling me repeatedly and sent countless apology messages.
But they were all blocked by the system.
I had long since blacklisted his number.
When the police arrived and took him away, I finally felt at ease waiting for my daughter’s
surgery to end.
During that time, news broke about the hospital’s illegal operations.
Unable to pay the breach of contract penalty, they announced their closure.
Even attempts to sell equipment at a discount yielded no buyers.
But I wasn’t done yet–I had my lawyer sue the hospital directly.
Let them plead their case in court.
Just as the hospital scandal finished airing, news of a homicide case quickly topped the
headlines.
Jack Lin, who had been released from prison only the day before, was now facing two new
murder charges.
One for Claire, and one for her daughter.
No, to be precise, the child wasn’t his.

Chapter 9
He had lost control and killed them after discovering the girl wasn’t his biological child.
Reading the news, I couldn’t help but sigh.
In the face of betrayal, I was clearly far luckier than he was.
After five long hours, the operating light finally went out.
The doctor stepped out, removing his mask with a heavy sigh of relief.
“The surgery was a success. With proper recovery, she’ll be fine.”
Tears streamed down my face as the tension in my body finally released.
Heaven had not abandoned me after all.
When my daughter woke up, she immediately asked about Ethan.
I decided not to lie and spent a long time explaining to her that Ethan would no longer be part of our lives.
I had expected her to struggle with the news, given her young age.
But to my surprise, as soon as she heard that her father had hurt me, she nodded without
hésitation.
“Daddy’s bad. I don” want Daddy anymore!”
I held her tiny hand, cold yet radiating warmth throughout my body.
Driving to the police station, I carried with me all the evidence–Claire’s background, provided by a friend, and the footage of Ethan’s affair.
Faced with irrefutable proof, Ethan stopped resisting.
But as he read through Claire’s records, he fell silent, unwilling to believe that the woman he loved so deeply, even willing to divorce for, had been full of lies.
After a long pause, I told him about Claire and her daughter’s deaths.

A flash of shock and pain crossed his face, but nothing more.
Eventually, he asked, “Lila, does destroying me make you happy?”
This time, it was my turn to fall silent.
Was I happy?
Not really.
But I knew that without this lesson, I would live in pain.
Finally, he signed the divorce papers, agreeing to compensate me for all my losses during the marriage.
He said it might take a long time since he’d need to change careers and rebuild his life.
Looking into his eyes, now marked by the passage of time, I said quietly before leaving,
“You don’t have to repay the money. As you said, money is the least of my concerns. But on one condition–you are never to appear before my daughter again. I’ll tell her you’re dead,”
Spending a few million for my daughter’s peace and safety was worth it.
As I walked out of the police station, I looked up at the clearing sky.
This unequal marriage had finally ended.
From now on, my only focus would be raising my daughter in peace and health.
