Chapter 5
Even Justin Wells was staring at me with a mixture of shock and… was that a hint of hurt?
I sighed softly and said, “Brian, let’s discuss this another time. We’ll leave it here for today.”
“Alright, I’ll wait for your call.”
Brian nodded, then turned to Jake and added, “Jake, make sure to take good care of Ms. Bryson
tonight.”
Don’t worry,” Jake replied with a nod.
Nicole Tanner and her group clearly didn’t want to leave immediately, but the club’s security had already arrived and escorted them out.
Even Justin Wells, who was holding little Tina, was taken out with them.
He kept glancing back at me, but Jake suddenly leaned into me and said, “I’m still here. Why are you looking at other men? Aren’t you afraid I’ll get jealous?”
And then, I saw Justin Wells leave, tears streaming down his face.
I opened my mouth but didn’t say a word.
Not long after, I returned to my room.
My private doctor came to give me a quick check–up. Once he confirmed that I was fine, he left..
I collapsed onto the sofa. Not far away, Jake poured himself a drink and leaned against the piano, sipping it slowly.
His lips, stained with red wine, glistened enticingly.
Since my unexpected encounter with Justin Wells five years ago, I hadn’t been with any other man.
Jake had wanted to give it a shot with me, but he eventually gave up–after all, he was destined for a political marriage
Occasionally, I would notice attractive men–handsome, fit–but they never stirred any real interest
in me.

That man, do you know him?” Jake suddenly asked.

I left out the chance meeting five years ago.
Jake studied me seriously for a moment before saying, “I can tell he has feelings for you. The look of love in someone’s eyes can’t be hidden.”
“What?”
I froze, then gave a bitter laugh. “It doesn’t matter. He has a child now.”
Ready–made. Saves you the trouble of giving birth,” Jake retorted, rolling his eyes.
“Get lost.”
I sighed.
“But he really did seem to want to protect you today. After you were hit, he even smashed a bottle on Grant Colson’s head for you.”
I couldn’t figure out what Justin Wells was thinking.
“Find someone to investigate, or you could just ask him yourself.”
Jake set his wine glass on the piano and said, “I’m off. Think about it yourself. I’m going to flirt with
someone.”
Investigate?
Forget it.
I’d just ask him myself.
After making up my mind, I lay down on the sofa and fell asleep.
The next morning. I was woken up by Jake.
And Nicole Tanner’s group was here too.
They stood in front of me and, in unison, knelt down
Nicole slapped her own face and said, “Ms. Bryson, I was wrong. Please don’t take it to heart. If

Jake used a damp towel to wipe my face. To an outsider, it might have looked like there was something going on between us.
After taking a moment to gather myself, I looked at Nicole Tanner and her group. “You can all get up. I won’t hold last night’s incident against you.”
As a businesswoman, even if I wanted revenge, I wouldn’t announce it outright.
As the saying goes, barking dogs never bite.
Those who make a lot of noise are rarely capable of much..
The ones who achieve big things never reveal their intentions to their adversaries.
“You really won’t hold it against us?” Nicole asked incredulously.
After all, as a notoriously vindictive second–generation rich kid in Dunsborough City, she had a hard
time believing anyone wouldn’t seek revenge.
I nodded. “You might not like hearing this, but the truth is, you’re not worth being my enemy. Now
go.”
The others didn’t react much, but Nicole hesitated for a moment before asking, “Then what about
our collaboration?”
“I’ll discuss the collaboration with your father. That’s not for you to decide,” I replied with a smile. “I’m a businesswoman. I won’t jeopardize mutual benefits over personal grievances–it’s not worth it. So don’t worry and leave.”
Nicole nodded, as if she’d been granted amnesty, and left with her group.
Once the door closed, my expression changed.
