Chapter 5
As expected, the teacher specially mentioned my son during the meeting, announcing that he had been elected class president for the semester and inviting him to come up and speak
mut my son refused.
He didn’t want to go on stage, and he didn’t want to speak.
I knew it was because he didn’t want to see Harvey sitting with that other child.
He didn’t want to admit that his own father would rather accompany someone else’s child to a parent teacher meeting than allow him the dignity of calling him “Dad” openly.
After the meeting. I held my son’s hand and went to the teacher’s office to complete his withdrawal from school.
As we walked out of the school gate, we ran into Harvey waiting by the roadside.
He stood there as if he’d been waiting for a long time, holding a stick of cotton candy in his hand.
“Why did it take so long? Let’s go home together.”
As Harvey spoke, he handed the cotton candy to my son.
“Go home together.”
Once, that was all my son and I had ever hoped for.
But now, those words only felt like a cruel irony.
My son reached out and took the cotton candy from Harvey’s hand. For the first time that evening, his gloomy expression gave way to a smile.
Seeing the anticipation in my son’s eyes, my heart softened. I was about to agree when I heard
Harvey say:
“Vivian’s son is a transfer student and didn’t participate in the previous class committee elections.”
“Why don’t you ask the teacher if your son can step down as class president and give Sunny the opportunity instead?”

ghat casual suggestion chilled both my son and me to the core.
Indeed, every gift had its price.
Even this stick of cotton candy came with a cost.
“Okay, Uncle Harvey.”
It was my son’s voice.
His eyes were red as he bit into the cotton candy.
Harvey’s expression softened slightly, and he was about to take my son’s hand when his phone rang.
It was Vivian.
“Harvey, Sunny isn’t feeling well. Can
you come to us now?”
Harvey’s face darkened, and without hesitation, he turned and got into the car.
The moment the car door closed, my son suddenly shouted loudly:
“Dad!”
Harvey froze mid–motion, his hand on the door. He leaned out, meeting my son’s reddened eyes.
After a long silence, he finally said:
“Take care.”
This time, he didn’t correct my son.
But this was the last time my son would ever call him “Dad.”
That night, my son and I packed our belongings and booked plane tickets to leave the country.
We didn’t mention Harvey again. The living room would no longer have a light left on all night, waiting for him to come home.
The next morning, my son and I left the house with our luggage and boarded the plane.
Before turning off my phone, I sent Harvey one final message:
Wishing you happiness.”

next second, the previously silent chat window started vibrating incesantly.
My finger hovered over the power button, unable to press dow
Lucky noticed my hesitation and glanced at the screen. His eyes instantly turned red.
He tugged at my sleeve and, lowering his head, murmured softly
“Mom we need to go.
I gently ruffled his hair, feeling both proud and heartbroken at how quickly he had matured.
At the office, Harvey stared at the “phone switched off notification on his screen, his frown
repening with each passing moment.
Yesterday, he had rushed over, only to find that Sunny was merely hungry and throwing a tantrum
for KFC.
Thinking about Lucky, whom he had left behind, a pang of guilt rose in his chest.
Sunny had enjoyed his meal thoroughly.
Today, if he took Lucky to KFC, perhaps he’d be just as happy…
“Harvey…” Vivian’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
Harvey glanced at Vivian, dressed in a low–cut, body–hugging dress, and frowned slightly.
Emily had an excellent figure but always wrapped herself up modestly, never dressing like this.
Vivian, noticing Harvey’s brief pause, assumed her charm was working. She leaned closer, her voice
soft as she said:
“The client has arrived, and the shareholders are here too. Let me go with you this time.”
A strong scent of roses wafted from her, and Harvey suddenly sneezed several times.
