hapter 518
August had barely begun when Charlotte started receiving one piece of good news after another.
Zoe was officially charged with sexual assault. The evidence against her was solid, and the police had already handed the case over to the prosecutor’s office. By mid–August, the prosecutors had filed a public indictment with the court.
Meanwhile, Jasper Corporation’s acquisition of several subsidiaries under ZH Corporation was in full swing.
Compared to Zoe, Thomas’s downfall was even worse.
He had been stuck in the hospital for more than a month, recovering from his injuries. But the moment he was discharged, the police showed up to take him away.
All the illegal things he had done in Sterling City came to light. Sean even assigned people to help the police gather evidence. In no time, every one of Thomas’s crimes had been confirmed.
He faced multiple charges, including rape, involuntary manslaughter, and disturbing the peace.
Even though his father, Charles, had already issued a public statement severing ties with him, Sean had no intention of letting the Turner family off the hook.
For years, Thomas had been able to run wild in Sterling City only because he had the power of his family and Charles’s influence behind him. So, the same day Thomas was arrested, Charles was also taken away by the anti–corruption commission
Around this time, Jasper Corporation resumed its partnership with Riley Corporation, making Sean a frequent visitor at the Riley estate.
Desmond and Sean saw more and more of each other, both in work and in daily life. And the more Desmond got to know him, the more he liked him. He finally let go of his old prejudice against Sean and the entire Jasper family.
Now, whenever Desmond looked at Sean, his eyes were full of genuine admiration.
In August, Jersey City was sweltering, like a furnace.
Sean knew exactly how to win people over. He told him to send refreshments to the employees at Charlotte’s law firm. Every weekday at three in the afternoon, everyone at Ascend Law Firm received afternoon tea.
Sometimes it was iced lemonade, sometimes chilled pudding or parfait, sometimes milk tea or coffee paired with pastries and fresh fruit. The men changed every day, and it was always something everyone enjoyed.
To be fair, Sam handled all these little details perfectly. In just a week, the employees at Ascend were full of praise whenever Sean’s name came up
Every day at work, Scott would overhear the young women at the firm gossiping about how perfect Sean and Charlotte were for each other. They called hem a match made in heaven and said they

hoped they would be invited to the wedding when the time came.
Asher had overheard this more than once, and all he could do was advise Scott to give up sooner
rather than later.
The days slipped by under Jersey City’s oppressive heat.
Before long, it was August 20–Sean’s birthday.
He was hosting a birthday party at one of his villas.
Charlotte took his birthday seriously.
That morning, she got up early and called in a stylist to do her hair and makeup. She tried on more than ten outfits but still wasn’t satisfied. So she called her two best friends to come help her choose.
“This one,” Lena said, holding up a hanger with a short white cocktail dress. The skirt was made of puffed tulle, dotted with tiny sparkling crystals–luxurious yet still sweet.
Charlotte shook her head. “This looks way too much like a wedding dress. I’m going to Sean’s birthday party, not an engagement party. It’s not really appropriate, is it?”
Lena and Mia exchanged a knowing look.
Mia snatched the dress from Lena and held it up against Charlotte. “Oh, come on, wear this one. It’s a princess dress. Today’s Sean’s birthday. He’s the prince, and you’re his princess. If you ask me, this is perfect.”
