Chapter 4
“Watch your mouth! She’s a blessing to the Davis family she’s carrying my son’s child!”
My bestie made sure everyone heard her as she yelled, “Oh, so not just a love child–she’s a homewrecker’s love child!”
“No wonder you were so desperate to kick my bestie out.”
“Gotta make room for the mistress, huh?”
Andrew may be dead, but legally, I was still his wife.
And like it or not, an illegitimate child is still an illegitimate child.
I looked at the woman in front of me–clearly well taken care of, glowing, and well–fed.
Meanwhile, back when I lived in that house, I was treated like garbage.
Up at 5 AM every morning to cook breakfast for the whole family.
Couldn’t eat until they were done.
Hand–washing their clothes in the dead of winter because my mother–in–law said using a washing machine was “too
expensive.”
My bestie shot me a glance–time to put on a show.
I clutched my chest, pretending to be heartbroken, tears welling up instantly.
“Mom! Is this really Andrew’s child?”
I kept my eyes on the mistress, waiting for her reaction.
If she admitted it now, that label would follow her kid forever.
“So what if it is?!” my mother–in–law snapped.
“Blame yourself for not being able to give us a grandchild!”
“If it weren’t for Laura, our family name would’ve died with Andrew!”
Laura hadn’t even gotten the chance to stop her before she blurted it all out.
And my bestie?
Oh, she was just being helpful, making sure everyone in the crowd understood the situation.
“This is my bestie, the real daughter–in–law.”

I pinched my thigh to keep a straight face, barely holding back my laughter.
My mother in law shot me a glare, but she clearly didn’t think she was in the wrong.
“If my son didn’t cheat, he’d have no heir!”
“What did he do wrong?!”
Someone in the crowd pulled out their phone to start recording. I made no effort to stop them.
“Mom,” I said sweetly, “as Andrew’s legal wife, I’m entitled to his estate.”
She scoffed.
“Like hell you are! He gave me every paycheck after we got married!”
“That’s our money, not yours! Don’t even think about touching a dime!”
Then she spat at me for good measure, looking smug as hell.
She probably thought I was after Andrew’s measly savings.
“As far as I’m concerned, you’re nothing to this family anymore.”
“Laura is the only daughter–in–law I recognize!”
Laura, tucked safely behind her, shot me a triumphant look.
I smirked.
Idiot.
She had no idea what she was losing.
Once they finally left, we had no interest in shopping anymore.
My bestie dropped me off at my hotel, making sure to remind me that if I needed money, I shouldn’t hesitate to ask.
I didn’t need to, though.
By tomorrow, the insurance payout would hit my account.
The next morning, I woke up to half a million dollars in my bank account.
I immediately paid my bestie back–plus sent her a $6,600 bonus.
Bestie: If your in–laws find out about this, they’ll drop dead from rage. LOL.
I grinned at my phone.
