Chapter 5
Three years of marriage, a little suffering, and I walked away with five hundred grand.
Not a bad deal.
Me‘ Come get a spa day.
My treat.
At the spa, I casually loaded up a $3000 membership.
“Give us every high–end treatment you’ve got.”
My bestie threw an arm around me.
“Sugar mama, take me with you!”
We got the full package–massages, facials, body treatments–head to toe.
I was in heaven.
Back in my marriage?
Forget a spa day–if I so much as bought a face mask, my mother–in–law would throw a fit.
Who knew being a widow could be this fun?
I let loose for the next few days.
Shopping, eating out, and snatching up all the designer bags I could never buy before.
Then I bought a house.
Put it under my parents‘ names.
Once it was fully renovated, I’d move them in.
Our hometown got brutally cold in winter, and my dad’s arthritis always flared up.
This city was way more comfortable.
Of course, my extravagant spending didn’t go unnoticed.
That’s when my in–laws finally realized what had happened.
They figured out I’d cashed in Andrew’s massive insurance policy.
And they lost it.

Took them a few days, but they tracked me down.
The hotel wouldn’t give them my room number, so they made a scene in the lobby.
“Get Jennifer down here! My son’s dead, and she’s living the high life on his insurance money!”
“She needs to hand it over–now!”
“That money belongs to our family, not some outsider!”
“Everybody, listen up!”
“This woman killed my son, and now she’s trying to leave us penniless!”
“She’s staying in a fancy hotel while we can barely afford food!”
“Is there no justice in this world?!”
She wailed and sobbed, drawing plenty of attention, until the front desk had no choice but to call me.
When I stepped off the elevator, I saw her putting on the performance of a lifetime.
Didn’t think she’d find out this fast.
Oh well.
She clearly had no shame–so why should I hold back?
I strode over, and she lunged for my wrist like she thought I’d run.
“Jennifer! Hand over Andrew’s insurance money!”
“No wonder you left so easily–you were just waiting to ditch us!”
“You’re living off my son’s blood money!”
My father–in–law loomed behind her, blocking my exit.
As if I’d even try to leave.
I pried her fingers off me and shoved her back.
Then I laughed.
“Ma’am, do you not remember how I begged you not to kick me out?”
I stared her down, letting my hatred seep into every word.
“You said you didn’t need me.”
“That we’d never have anything to do with each other again.”

Chapter 5
“When Andrew died, I didn’t take a single cent of his money”
“Which means I don’t owe you anything.”
“As for the insurance payout? The beneficiary was me.”
“Not you. So legally?”
“You don’t get a damn dime.”
Andrew thought he was being clever, but he didn’t realize I was right there when he got that life insurance policy
for me.
I teased him on purpose.
“Wow, you’re really setting yourself up, huh?”
“Climbing the ladder, cashing in, and–losing your
wife.”
Andrew looked guilty as hell.
“Babe, what are you even talking about?”
“I should get you one too,” I said.
“I’ll put your parents as the beneficiaries.”
Right then, Andrew got a call from Laura.
He was in such a rush to leave that he scribbled his own name on the policy without even noticing–he was the only beneficiary.
He signed it himself.
Black and white.
His name.
Whose fault is that?
