Chapter 7
I hid my smile and sighed.
“It was my mother–in–law.”
The night Andrew died, he hadn’t been drinking outside.
He came home in a great mood.
And that’s when his mom suggested a toast.
Andrew didn’t think twice.
She kept topping up his glass.
One after another.
The officer narrowed his eyes.
“Why didn’t you drink?”
I hesitated, then gave a bitter smile.
“I was married for three years and never had a child.”
“My mother–in–law wouldn’t even let me sit at the dinner table with them.”
While they drank, I cleaned up after their mess.
And when I turned around, Andrew was gone.
“I even called him,” I said.
“He didn’t pick up. You can check my call logs.”
After a long pause, the officer nodded.
“Alright. You’re free to go for now.”
Laura was still at the station, waiting to see me get locked up.
When she saw me walk free, she lost it.
“Why are you letting her go?! She’s a murderer!”
“She killed her husband! Did she bribe you or something?!”
I shot her a smug smile. God, she was dumb.

“Ma’am, watch your mouth! Our investigation is fair and thorough.”
“Jennifer had no opportunity to commit the crime.”
“In fact, you had way more motive.”
“Now, please cooperate with our investigation.”
Laura froze.
“Me? What the hell are you talking about?!”
“Why would I kill my own baby’s father?!”
But if you looked close enough, you could see the panic in her eyes.
I smirked and met her gaze.
“Oh, I don’t know.”
“Maybe because Andrew was infertile?”
“So tell me, Laura–where exactly did that baby come from?”
Thanks to Laura’s own report, the cops did a second autopsy, which completely cleared my name.
When I heard the news in the interrogation room, I broke down in tears.
It wasn’t me. I wasn’t the problem.
Andrew was just never meant to have kids.
Laura had no idea her deepest, darkest secret was about to be exposed.
She tried to keep a straight face, but the way her lips trembled gave her away.
“Now,” I said, throwing her words back at her, “why don’t you cooperate with the investigation?”
When I walked out of the station, my bestie was already there, waiting for me.
She sighed in relief when she saw I was okay.
Andrew’s parents were there too.
But when they saw me instead of Laura, their faces twisted with rage.
“Why the hell is it you?!”
“You killed my son! Why didn’t the cops lock you up?!”
Andrew’s mother stormed up to me, her face full of hate.

I could barely contain my excitement.
Just wait until they learned the truth.
“Because,” I said slowly, savoring the moment, “it wasn’t me who killed your son.”
“It was someone else.”
“Liar!” she spat.
She thought I was trying to stir up trouble.
