Chapter 18
Tihint that underful Mom, I really do. You deserve happiness and you two make a cute couple,” I slipped off the bench, evathing both of our empty plates and headed to the trash bin. When I turned back, Cody was sitting next to my Mom on
ach and they were talking quietly. I suppose he’d been waiting for me to leave so he could have a moment with her. 1 smiled and turned towards the stables. I wanted to check on Bailey and Buck before we went back out with the cattle.
Hey there stranger, I heard his voice from behind me, as I was in the stall with Buck, brushing out his mane. The timber of his toke always gave me goose bumps when it was low and soft like that. I could smell him, and even with the sweat and dirt we were all covered in, he smelled good. He smelled like Dawson.
“Hey yourself.” I stepped out of the stall, latching the door and setting the brush on the shelf next to it. “This day has been dang, haven’t had a chance to really talk to you. Things seem to be going well with the cattle though, don’t you think?‘ I was making small talk.
“Sure, it usually does. Cody is good at this, he’s been running the cattle side for decades.” Dawson took a step towards me.
You seem to be a natural out there, Doc. He put an emphasis on Doe. Sometimes I forget I’m a doctor.
“Oh really, I wasn’t sure how I was doing. This stuff is pretty new to me, but medicine is medicine, so the stuff I have to do has been pretty great. I truly love it. I was being honest, I did love it.
“I’m glad. It means you will stick around, He looked at me hopeful. “Did you talk to the Alpha yet? About pledging to the
pack?
I actually hadn’t, things had been so busy the past two weeks, preparing for all this breeding stuff. I was hoping to after this was over. I shook my head no, biting my lip. “I haven’t. I’m going to, it’s just been busy. I can assure you, we aren’t going anywhere. I think Mom and Cody like each other.”
“I noticed,” he laughed. “I’m glad you’re staying. I don’t want to rush things Ash, but I do want you to know how I feel. He closed the distance between us, pulling me close. I laughed trying to pull back.
“I stink Dawson. Literally like heifers,” I placed both my palms on his chest. I couldn’t help but notice how strong and solid he felt, it was like pushing against a brick wall. His pecs twitched under my hands.
“You don’t,” he insisted. “You smell like you, delicious.” His nose was near my neck and he was inhaling my scent. Then he suddenly smiled and said “Well maybe a little like a heifer.”
I smacked his arm, “Stop, see I told you.”
Dawson laughed that deep laugh that I had learned to love so much. “Just joking,” and he bent his head down to brush his lips across mine. “Can we have some time together later, maybe have a beer after all this and just talk?”
“Hmm mmm, sure.” I stepped back this time and he let me. “We have to get back to work though, everyone should be finished up with lunch. He shook his head in affirmative and we walked back out to the coral to finish up todays work.
It was time to knock off for the day. The Alpha told everyone to be back out there at seven in the morning. He let them know that breakfast would be outside, in the BBQ area. With that he left everyone to their evening.
