Things had been going well since Carolyn moved in. We were happy. I couldn’t wait for her to be my mate, my wife, my everything. We had talked to the Alpha about a mating ceremony. Since I’m the Beta, it’s appropriate to do this in front of the pack, to let them know that she is my Beta female. Carolyn and Jenna had been working on the plans, and we were hoping that we could do it soon. The weather had turned cold, and it had begun to snow, leaving the earth blanketed in a white carpet. I personally thought a winter ceremony would be beautiful. We could complete it, and get married as well.
My mind kept wandering to the phone calls. They had stopped for a while, which actually made me more uneasy. I didn’t mention it to Carolyn. I didn’t want to scare her. Being a Beta and a warrior, I knew the tactics they were using. Put her on edge, then wait it out and let her get comfortable. I could feel it, something was going to happen. The question was, when and where? I tried my best to not let Carolyn go into town alone, without making it to obvious. I either went with her or made sure Ashlynn was with her. I knew that since her and Dawson had mated, even without a mind link, he could tell if something was wrong, and he could follow her through the mate bond. This gave me a only a small bit of comfort. That and knowing this was our land and any unfamiliar wolves in our territory would be watched. We had warriors posted every where, in plain site, though most wouldn’t know it.
I had just finished my days work. With the weather being what it was, it was off season for us. I mostly made sure the cattle were fed, and moved from time to time just to keep them active. I had to make sure they had access to the big cattle barn, so they could get out of the elements if they needed. I would ride out with the vet techs to check on the health of the animals as well, but mostly, winter was slow. It was barely four o’clock when I walked in the front door. Carolyn was in the kitchen, just pulling something from the oven. The entire house smelled delicious. I walked up to Carolyn and from behind I gave her a hug and kissed her neck. She set down her pan and turned to face me, throwing her arms around me and planting a soft kiss on my lips. This would never get old. I would never tire of this woman, she was incredible.
“Now that’s a nice welcome home. What are you making, it smells amazing,” I peaked over her shoulder to the pan on the counter.
“I have chili in the crockpot and this is homemade cornbread. Hope you are hungry. I figured the weather called for something warm and comforting.”
I took a whiff in and couldn’t help but feel like my mouth was watering just at the smell. “Amazing,” I told her.
“Also, Ashlynn and Dawson are coming to dinner. I thought a nice family dinner would be good for a change,” her smile was contagious, I couldn’t help but return it.
“Sounds good, I’m gonna shower real quick and change. What time is dinner?“, I asked.
“They should be here in about thirty minutes, I figured you would all be done early, what with the weather turning,” she turned back to her pot of chili, giving it a stir and checking the taste. I swatted her on the butt and ran up the stairs, just hearing her yell at me, “Hey you, don’t tease me like that and run away!”
*Our guests are coming soon babe, we have time for us later,” I hollered as I ran up the stairs to shower. I could hear her laughter, it was like
music.
Dawson
Ashlynn and I made our way over to Cody and Carolyn’s. The sun had already set as it often does in winter, but the moon cast a beautiful light over the freshly fallen snow. We were bundled up in warm coats, our boots kicking through the snow as we hurried to the front porch. Just before we made it, I bent down and picked up some snow and made a small snowball and chucked it at Ashlynn, hitting her right in the butt. “Hey, she turned back towards me pretending to be mad. She was quick in returning fire and it hit me square in the forehead. She laughed the whole way up the porch and knocked on the door.
I wiped the snow from my face and bounded up the stairs, just as her mom opened the door, I smeared some wet snow in Ashlynn’s face. “Dawson, what are you doing?“, Carolyn yelled at me.
Ashlynn and I were both laughing, “Just getting even Mrs. Cane.” She pulled the door open and let us in. We peeled off our jackets and took off our boots, leaving them by the door, so as not to track snow all over the house. Carolyn was laughing at us at this point, seeing that I had snow

stuck in my hair from Ashlynn’s solid hit to my forehead.
“You two are like children sometimes,” she said shaking her head as she walked to the kitchen.
“Well Mom, it’s no fun to act like old people. We are still young you know,” Ashlynn told her as we followed behind. I loved that she could be such a serious woman, professional in her career, and then playful when she wanted to be. I loved this woman so much, she was just perfect for

About that time, Cody came down the stairs, his hair clearly towel dried, wearing some sweats. I gave him a look.
“What? This is my house. I can wear what I want. Besides we are family now, I’m going to be Ashlynn’s step dad,” he gave us a smirk. I just groaned. It didn’t even cross my mind that he would now be my father in law, once he and Carolyn mated.
