I had mind linked Dawson as soon as my Mom passed out. It was lucky I caught her before her head hit anything. The bloody rabbit was just to much for her. I was honestly more angry than afraid at this point. Seriously, who could be toying with us? Uncle Wyatt talking about everyone has enemies and with the right resources, you could infiltrate any pack. I was over all this nonsense and hostility.
I laid Mom down on the floor and placed a cool washcloth on her forehead. I went back to the window to see several of our pack warriors sniffing around the house. There were distinct paw tracks up until about four feet from the window, with drops of blood. All of the warriors steered clear of them, so as not to mess up the evidence. It wasn’t long before the Alpha was outside getting updates on the situation. There were still some wolves out running the perimeter of the pack territory, specifically the ranch. Once that was cleared, they would branch out further to the edge of pack territory. Everyone who was not essential to the current investigation was ordered to stay inside by the Alpha.
Mom woke up after a couple of minutes, sitting herself up and leaning her back against the island of the kitchen. She looked over at me, still pale, but obviously no longer in shock. “What’s happening?,” she asked.
I informed her again of the rabbit and then the situation outside. She just shook her head, then got up to wash the dishes. She said she needed to keep herself busy in order to distract herself from all of the chaos. It’s like every time we feel like we can relax a little bit, something happens.
After about an hour, Dawson and Cody come back to the house. Apparently they found a breach in a fence that backs up to the area they call no man’s land. It’s a stretch of land that is not owned by any of the packs in the area. Typically these are either government land or owned by humans. The warriors were now spreading out to follow the smell. Dawson said he was pretty sure he knew the smell and which pack it was from, but he wasn’t going to speculate until it was confirmed. The Alpha seemed to be in agreement, but again, they wanted confirmation.
We decided it would be best to turn in for the night, until we heard more. Dawson and I headed for my loft, while Cody locked up the house tight, keeping any would be attackers away from Mom. The house was virtually impenetrable, which heavy duty locks and bullet proof glass. All of the pack leaders had similar structures, it was common, in order to protect them from potential assassination.
Dawson and I made it to the loft and dead bolted the door behind us. We then went and pulled the curtains shut on the big bay window and turned off the lights in the living area, in the hopes to keep away prying eyes. As we walked into the kitchen to make some tea, I turned to Dawson wanting answers. I refused to be kept in the dark. He knew something. “Tell me Dawson, what’s the deal? You must know something.” I stood with my back leaning against the counter, arms folded across my chest. I watched as he fidgeted, running his hand up the back of his
neck.
Dawson sighed, then looked at me. “There is a pack just across the border in Wyoming. We haven’t had any issues with them, ever. In fact they are supposed to be allies, with signed agreements and all. But the smell around the tracks leading to the house and on the dead rabbit was distinctly them. The warriors have some of the best trackers, so they are following the scent. Hopefully it leads them to the answer.”
“Hmmm. What I don’t get is my Uncle stating that everyone has enemies and with the right resources, any pack could be infiltrated. But that pack are not enemies, so what’s that supposed to mean?“, I asked him.
“Initially I thought it might be the Godsend pack, or at least Jacob from that pack. Now that we have a history with issues from that guy and the Alpha hasn’t done much in the way of punishment, that was my first thought. But then the scent was not theirs. I guess we will have to wait and see what comes of the search. Dawson closed the distance between us and pulled me into his arms. Sometimes you just needed your mates touch to calm your nerves. He held me for a few minutes, then the tea kettle whistled loud, nudging us from our peace.
“When will we know if they have found anything?“, I asked as I turned to make us our tea.
“The Alpha will call a meeting. It could be tonight, it could be tomorrow. It’s late though, so I think we should get some rest and prepare for whatever is coming tomorrow,” the look on his face was serious, his forehead wrinkled in thought. I sighed, sipping my tea. Time to wait. That’s all we could do at that moment.
