Chapter 25
Ashlynn
We had a great day in town. I really love the charm of it and all the shops were adorable. We stopped at the wine store on the way out of town and picked up a few bottles. I didn’t drink wine often, but it’s nice to have around for the rare occasions I did. I left Mom as she made her way to the main house and I headed to my loft. I went in and placed the wine in the refrigerator, then took of my sandals and grabbed myself some water. I sat down on the couch, pulling my feet up
inder me and flipped on the news. I doubted there would be anything exciting going on it this little town, but may as well check. Getting bored quickly of the news, I flipped the channel and found some old sitcom and left it on. As I stood to walk to the kitchen, I heard a knock on the door. I opened it to find Dawson standing there, still in his work clothes. I glanced over at the clock. It was after eight and the sun had set.
“Hey there, you alright?” I asked him, opening the door a little further. “Care to come in?” He nodded, stepped inside and
shut the door.
“Sorry to just barge in without an invitation. I just wanted to talk to you before I called it a night.” He gave me one of his gorgeous smiles. I motioned for him to enter.
“Do you want a beer or something? Looks like you’re still working, what’s that about?” I asked as I walked toward the
kitchen. He followed behind me, sitting at the counter on one of the bar stools.
“Yeah well I gave everyone the rest of the day off. I had to tend to the horses. I saw your light on, so I figured you were back from town.” He takes the beer I hand to him, not getting up from his chair. I take that as a hint and sit at the other stool, resting my chin on my hand.
“So how was it?” he asked.
“Hmmm?”
“Town. How was it? Did you like what you saw?” he asked.
“Oh yeah, thanks for the tip on the diner. The food was great.” Then I remembered our waitress. “Oh, by the way, I met a friend of yours today. She said to tell you hello.”
Dawson took a sip of his beer, peering over at me. “Oh yeah? Who was that?”
“Bonnie. The waitress at the diner. She seemed kind of annoyed when I told her I was the new veterinarian over here, then she made a point to tell me to give you a message.” I shrugged, standing up to grab myself a beer. I hate to see someone
drink alone. When I went to stand Dawson grabbed my arm, I raised an eyebrow and he quickly let go.
“She’s not my friend Ashlynn. I barely speak to that woman. She’s nothing but trouble. You should steer clear of her if you can.” He sounded very serious and this gave me a moment of pause.
I grabbed my beer and sat back down next to him. “Trouble huh? What kind of trouble?” I had my own ideas about that but
wanted to see how much he would tell me.
Dawson sighed, “In the interest of honesty, because I hate a liar, I won’t lie to you either. I dated her. Ten years ago. It was brief. She’s not the kind of girl I would consider worth my time. She’s since dated many other men, and has a pup with a guy over at Godsend Ranch. As far as I know, they are still together and she lives there with him. But, she’s the jealous type and she likes to cause trouble.”
