Chapter 55

“We have been in alliance for decades, but if you can’t control your pack,” Chris was trying to provoke Gabe at this point, I can’t help if my wolves retaliate.” He’s standing with his arms crossed over his chest.
Alpha Gabe has always been very much in control of his emotions, but I can certainly feel anger coming off of him. “There are consequences Chris. Now about the other guy with the tattoo. Who was it?”
Gabe is clearly not intimidated by the intended threat, and he wants answers. Chris and his Beta exchange looks again.
Chris waves his arm around. “You expect me to know every one of my pack members tattoos? That’s Judicrous. We’ll identify him and handle it accordingly. Now I think you better be going now Alpha Gabe.” He spits out his name like it’s poison on his tongue. “Let’s try not to make a habit of meeting under such stupid circumstances, shall we?” He marches right up the steps and into the house without a backward glance. His Beta is still standing there glaring at us.
“You heard the Alpha, time to go.” The Beta takes a step forward. Gabe just shakes his head and waves him off, turning to all of us, mind- linking to load up. “See you again,” the Beta smarts off with a smirk on his face.
We all load up in the truck, and start heading down the long dirt road. It’s now dark and the there is no light on the road, except what comes from the beams of our headlights. “That guy is a prick,” Alpha Gabe mutters. “He’s not even worth the effort.” No one says anything. We know Gabe could tear him limb from limb without even trying. The only wolf I’ve seen bigger than Gabe is that Beta back there, and he’s only thicker and wider, not taller. His size means he’s slower.
The window is rolled down on my side and I notice some movement in the trees as we drive down the road. It’s no surprise his patrol would follow us to the end of the road, so I don’t think to much of it. Dawson is in front of us, with four warriors in his truck. He comes to a stop at the intersection. Just as he’s pulling out, Gabe yells out “What the fuck?”
The brake lights are off and Dawson’s truck is rolling forward into the intersection faster than it should be. I see one of the warriors climb out the window of the crew cab, and pull open Dawson’s door. There seems to be a struggle, as he pushes his way into the driver seat, and then he hits the brakes, puts the truck in park, and jumps out to run back to us.
“He’s got an arrow in his neck Alpha, like one of them wolfsbane darts. He’s out like a light. We didn’t even see where that came from. What do you want me to do?” The warrior had run back to tell us what was going on.
“Shit, drive him to the pack hospital, and fast. Forget speed limits, I can handle the sheriff. They need to pump him full of fluids to get that out of his system. We will meet you there. Now hurry up,” he waves him back to the truck. The warrior runs back, hops in and he’s screaming down the road.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” I tell the Alpha.

“Me either. We are out numbered to go back, so let’s get Dawson taken care of, and then I will call Chris, we head down the road behind the other truck, driving just a little slower than they are. This did not go the way we expected.

I woke at dawn, feeling out of sorts. I didn’t feel sick exactly, I just felt kind of off. I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach that I couldn’t put my finger on. I took a hot shower and got dressed. I didn’t actually have to be up for another two hours, but I couldn’t sleep any more. I made myself some tea to try and calm my stomach, but it wasn’t helping. I decided I needed to go make sure Dawson got back ok last night. When I walked out to the front, I saw his truck parked there. That’s a good sign, he’s probably sleeping then. I’ll just let him be for now.
I walked to the clinic to get started on my paperwork, maybe if I started now, I could finish right after lunch. It would be nice t t an early day. I unlocked the clinic and flipped on the lights, heading straight for my desk in the back. I made a point to review yesterdays mares, in case I missed anything. I checked the calendar to see we have three more coming in today from Oregon. I looked at the clock, they should be here by ten o’clock based on the itinerary they sent me. I’ve got five hours to get prepared for them. I can review all the documents they emailed to

me and then all we have to do is the actual exam. I could probably be done by noon, since there were only three. I sat down at my desk and i began plugging away at my work, that uneasy feeling still in my stomach.
