Life Change 65

Ashlynn

I woke with a start and looked at the clock. It was six in the morning. I’d gotten about five hours sleep. Not the greatest, but could be worse. I took a cold shower to try and shake the sleep from my body, grabbed myself some coffee and wolfed down some toast and a fried egg. I was out the door in under fifteen minutes and got right to work on the paperwork for the incoming mares today. They were due to arrive by eight this morning, and I was happy for an early start. Jarred and Mike walked in at seven

Hey Ash, good morning. How’s Dawson? Mike asked as they started preparing the equipment for the day

He’s still alive, stable I guess. He hasn’t moved at all though, not even a twitch. I told him. I was slightly concerned about this, but I knew all his organs were working properly, so my hope was that his wolf was keeping him asleep to try and heal his body

Jarred and Mike exchanged looks. Is it true that the dart had liquid silver in it? This time it was Mike asking. I just shook my head yes and kept working on my paper work. The truth was, I didn’t really want to talk about it. I needed my work to distract me. I saw out of the corner of my eyes, the two techs having a conversation, which was very obviously over mind link. Both looked my way before getting back to work

We heard the truck pull in, a large semi with a livestock trailer behind it. I was surprised when we walked out front, to find the Luna helping to unload the horses. Luna, you don’t have to do that.I told her as I tried to take a lead rope from her

*I assure you I am just fine helping Ashlynn. I have been around horses my whole life. Your Uncle said you might need help with Cody being in town at the hospital, so I’m here to assist however I can. I’m no little princess you know, she gave me a smile. Jenna definitely did not act like a princess

I laughed and gave her a nod and went to grab the next mare, while Jarred and Mike unloaded the last two. I had a quick chat with the ranch hand who came with the horses. Mike showed him to the bunk house. He would stay the night to give us time to look over the mares, then head out tomorrow, hopefully leaving all four behind for breeding

I was just finishing up the last mares health check, when Cody walked into the clinic. He looked none the worse for wear, his clothes a little wrinkled, a cup of coffee in his hand. How did it go today?he asked, sitting across from me in one of the chairs in the waiting area

Pretty good. I’m finishing up now. I plan to eat something and then head in to see Dawson. Did his Mom show up this morning?I asked

Yes she did. She’s anxious to meet you. She will sit with Dawson till you get there, then she will come back here till tomorrow morning. You can have tomorrow off. There aren’t any incoming mares. I’m gonna get some sleep. He stood and walked to the door

Cody?,he turned back to me. Thank you for last night. He gave me a smile and walked out. He was a good guy. My Mom was lucky to have

found him

I finished up my paperwork, then went to eat and change my clothes. I was anxious to see Dawson. I hadn’t slept well last night, dreams plagued me with worry. I was hopeful that maybe there would be improvement today. My heart was filled with nothing but hope and love. My mate had to live

Ashlynn

As I approached Dawson’s room, I peeked in the window. There sat a lovely woman, with hair that was dark and curly. She had it clipped up into a french twist. She was dressed in slacks and a button down dress shirt, looking very put together. I knew that was Dawson’s mother, and when she turned to the window and smiled at me, it confirmed it. She had the same piercing green eyes as him and dimples. The only thing giving away her age were her smile lines around her eyes. She was obviously a women who was filled with joy. She stood and walked out to

greet me

Hello, you must be Ashlynn. She didn’t wait for an answer, just took me into a hug. She pulled back still holding onto my arms. Let me look at you. You’re so beautiful. I’m so happy my son found his mate. She was smiling

Thank you Mrs. Campbell. It’s a pleasure to meet you, even if the circumstances aren’t the best.”

She waved her hand in dismissal, No Mrs. Campbell. Please. Call me Alice. Or even Mom if you’re comfortable with that. I mean you’re the one that’s going to be giving me grand children one day. I nearly choked on that one

Yes well, ummin. How’s Dawson?, I asked changing the subject

Oh yes, well the nurses say he’s doing well. They’ve removed a lot of silver from his blood stream and so they are hopeful. They will continue this dialysis for another six hours or so, then they will get him disconnected from the machine. It’s a waiting game of course. I’m sure having his mate near helps a great deal, she gave me a smile and rubbed my arm with her hand. Well dear, I’m going to head over to the ranch. Alpha Gabe is going to put me up in the main house for a few days. I’d stay in my little cottage here in town, but I don’t like to be there without my mate. He will be here in a few days, he had some things to take care of back home first, she turned to walk down the hall and then just as quickly turned back. It’s going to be fine Ashlynn, I know my son. He won’t stop fighting. Have faith. And with that she was gone

Have faith. I was sure trying. I went into the room and sat in the same chair I’d been occupying for days. I grabbed Dawson’s hand and turned it over, tracing the lines in his palms, rubbing my thumb over his callouses that he earned from hard work. I could feel tiny tingles as I touched him. Oddly, I had not felt it the day before. I wondered if this was a sign. I hoped it was. Dawson, I know you’re in there. Please fight. Come back to me. We have so much more to do in this life together. I continued to talk to him, hoping he could hear me. They say hearing is the last thing to go
