Chapter 66

Dawsen

I could feel the darkness all around me, a heavy weight sitting on my chest. I tried so hard to open my eyes, but nothing but darkness was there. I couldn’t remember what happened, how did I get here. I could vaguely here beeping. I tried to reach my mind out but I couldn’t. I tried to talk to my wolf, but he didn’t answer. I could feel him locked in the back of my mind. What’s happening to me?

I’m laying there, when I suddenly feel something. Is that my hand? I feel like someone’s touching my hand. It’s warm and comforting. The fact that I can feel anything at all has me excited. I feel like I’ve been trapped in the dark for so long. I can feel my heart rate climbing

Ashlynn

As I continued to touch Dawson’s hand, his heart rate suddenly spiked and alarms started going off. The nurse ran into the room, quickly turned off the alarm, her eyes wide. She pressed a button to check his blood pressure and started making notes in the chart. She turned her attention to me. Did anything happen? Did he move or make any sounds?she asked

I just shook my head no. Nothing at all. What does this mean?I asked her

She shrugged, It could mean nothing or something. Were you doing anything when his heart rate spiked? Touching him or saying anything?”

Yes. I was talking to him. I was rubbing his palm. Is that relevant?I asked

She nodded, Very. Keep doing that, maybe he’s trying to wake up. Maybe you’re stimulating his brain with that, or his wolf. I’m going to call Dr. Cortez. She hurried out of the room

I took her words as a sign. I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to make sure I didn’t touch any of the tubing or wires. I lifted his hand and placed in on my lap. I continued to rub his palm, softly whispering to him. His heart rate spiked again. Oh please Moon Goddess, let him wake

  1. up

A few minutes later, Dr Cortez hurried in. He asked me to return to the chair so he could do a quick assessment. He began pointing lights in Dawson’s eyes, poking him in various places with a pin to see if he reacted. He checked his reflexes. Listened to his heart and his lungs, and gently assessed his abdomen and internal organs. The last thing he did was to take his knuckles and harshly rub along his sternum. Dawson groaned. It was loud, but it was a response. Good, all of this is good.Dr Cortez said to no one in particular. He gave me a curt smile and

walked out

I sat there for a while, then the nurse came back in. She told me I needed to step out for about an hour, they needed to remove him from the machine and pull out the line that was in his neck. I figured this was a good time to go get some dinner in the cafe

I got myself some pizza and a small salad and sat to eat alone. I was both excited and worrjed. I wanted to know what was happening in that room. I knew though that I couldn’t be in the nurses way, so I would do as she asked. I took this opportunity to pull out the cell phone I rarely ever used or carried with me, and called over to the ranch. Luna Jenna answered. Hello Ashlynn, did you want to speak to your Uncle or your mother?she asked

Oh either will do, whoever is closest.”

A minute later Uncle Gabe picked up. Is everything ok Ashlynn? I assume you’re there with Dawson, his mother showed up about a half an hour ago.”

Yes, I’m here. I’m actually in the cafeteria. They asked me to leave the room for an hour. They are taking him off dialysis.”

He was quiet on the other end of the line for a minute, What’s that mean?he asked

I don’t really know. His heart rate spiked a few times. He groaned when the doctor administered a painful sternal rub, but no other indication he’s waking up. Dr. Cortez did say this was very good though, I told him

Ok so this is good news then. I’m glad. Well you will keep us posted, right? I know Cody told you to take tomorrow off. Are you planning to stay at the hospital tonight, or do you want me to send you some relief?he asked

Chapter 66

I’m fire, I will stay. Mr. Campbell is evining buck in the morning. I told him. We spoke for a few more minutes about some ranch stuff and then hung up. I continued to sit in silence finishing my meal and writing for that hour to be up

Once I was given the go shend to enter Datein’s room, 1 es! back down next to the het. the tanked different. He had more color. The big machine was gone. There was a large bandage on his neck where that catheter had been. The only noise in the room now was his heart beat nit the moniter over the bed. Now that all of that stuff was removed, I saw he just had some fluids going into the LV that was in his right forearm. suppose we just wait now. That’s what the nurse said. As I sat there Welding his hand for hours, talking to him, in hopes he could hear me, I filled him in on what was happening at the ranch. I told him how he ended up in the hospital. I told him his Mom was here. I even told him what I ate for dinner, as I ran out of things to say. I looked at the clock and it was late, eleven at night. My eyes were feeling heavy I made a decision that I was going to lay down with my mate. I moved his arm, so it was behind me and crawled onto the bed onto my side. I gently laid thy head on his chest and pulled his arm around me. It felt good to be close to him, to take in his scent that was only him. I gently ran my fingers over the stubble on his chin, not used to the feel of halt on his face. I smiled up at him. I miss you so much Dawson. Come back to

I curled into his side and went to sleep, with the hopes that when I woke up, things would be better. At some point, the nurse must have come in and thrown a blanket over me. I vaguely recall it, but didn’t open my eyes to confirm. My wolf whimpered in my head before she too went to sleep, leaving me to dream about Dawson and out brief time together. I hoped that this would not be the last of our memories
