Carolyn
I moved into Cody’s house that morning. It was easy to be with him. It just felt right. We spent our evenings just talking and getting to know more about each other. Sometimes we ate at the main house with Gabe and Jenna. Sometimes we stayed in and one of us cooked.
When Cody wasn’t working, we would walk around the pack lands, and he would show me different points of interest. I needed to get to know this place if I was planning on spending the rest of my life here.
Cody and I still hadn’t progressed our intimate relationship beyond kissing and cuddling. He said he was willing to wait until I was ready. After all I had been through, I was hesitant about it. Grady would sometimes beat me and then rape me when he was done, and that had left some serious trauma on my soul. I knew Cody wasn’t like that, but I had my demons to conquer and I was slowly healing. I hadn’t had a mans true affections in years. It scared me that it could all end in an instant.
It had been two weeks since the last odd phone call. Tobias had some connections in Portland and was trying to track the number. Since it was à cellular number, it was proving more difficult that he had thought it would be. Ashlynn had offered to just call the number herself and see who answered, but the last thing I wanted was for this crazy man to have my daughters number and to start bothering her as well. I wanted her to be happy, and already she had so much happening in her young life, she didn’t need to add to it.
I had returned to some of the things I loved to do. Gardening was one of them. Since it was still winter, I had bought some earth boxes and I was planting various things in those, using one of the empty stalls in the main stall barn. It was heated and my plants would keep there till spring. I was humming softly, as I planted some herbs in a smaller box that Cody had made for me from some leftover lumber. My phoning ringing broke the quiet in the barn. I reached back and pulled it from the back pocket of my jeans and without even glancing at the number, I
answered it. “Hello.”
“It’s about time you answered the phone,” and unknown mans voice spoke to me from the other end of the phone.
“Excuse me? Do I know you?“, I rocked back on my heels, squatting in front of my herb box. I tried to keep my voice calm, even though I was anything but.
“Of course you do Carolyn, although it’s been a number of years since we have seen each other. We will be meeting again soon,” his voice was
low and held a hint of a threat to his last sentence.
“What do you want?”
He was quiet for a few moments, I could hear his heavy breathing. While waiting for his reply, I stood and made my way from the stall I was in. I walked as quickly as I could to Cody’s office, hoping he’d be in there. I didn’t even bother knocking, just opened the door softly and slid in. Cody looked up from a ledger he was pouring over and was about to say something, when I put my finger to my lips for him to not say anything. I pointed to the phone, then put it on speaker, still waiting for the response from the heavy breather on the other end. Cody had a look of realization on his face, as soon as I set the phone down on the desk, facing up.
A deep sigh sounded on the other end. “I am surprised at you Carolyn. You were always so much smarter than this, being an Alpha’s daughter and all. You should know you would have to pay the consequences at some point. I actually surprised you are even still alive.”
I looked up at Cody’s face. He was mad, his face red with rage, his fists clenched on top of the desk. I knew it was taking everything he had not to say something, but we needed information.
“Tell me your name,” I stated to the man on the phone. “How can I know what you’re referring too if you don’t tell me who you are?”
A deep laugh sounded. “You think I am stupid? Ha. I won’t tell you anything. You will just be surprised when I show up out of nowhere. The truth will be revealed to you soon Carolyn.” He stopped talking for a brief second and then his voice changed to a near whisper as he asked me, “How are you sleeping at night?“.
At that moment, Cody reached over and hung up the phone. Looking at my face, he stood and walked around the desk and wrapped me in his arms. He is baiting you Carolyn. Don’t let this crazy person get into your head. We will find him and we will settle this once and for all.* Cody placed a kiss on top of my head. He reached over and grabbed the phone off the desk, taking me by the hand and leading me out the door. “Come on. Let’s go share this new information with the Alpha. Seems the guy has a new number, let’s see where it leads us.
