Mating Moon
Chapter 78
Ashlynn
I sat on the porch of Cody’s house with Mom. We were sitting on the porch swing, watching the sun begin to set. It was chilly, mid October. I’d been working non stop for weeks. We had some mares that didn’t take well to the breeding, and because Dawson had been out of commission for a while, it was mostly myself and the vet techs trying to do everything with the breeding. Some of the hands were helping in between their other duties, but it was a process. We had to keep some of the mares an extra month to try and impregnate them again, before sending them back to their respective ranches. Today was the last day of all of that and I was worn out.
Dawson was in town with the Alpha, seeing Dr Cortez, trying to get the all clear to return to work. He’d been seeing specialists almost daily since his release from the hospital. I was pretty sure he was going stir crazy himself, but with the silver poisoning, he was still feeling pretty tired. Many times, I would come home from a long day and find him already asleep. I felt guilty waking him, even though I wanted so badly to have some alone time with him. It seemed whenever those opportunities would arise, we would be interrupted by something happening on the ranch. I was hopeful that when he returned from town this evening, that he could return to work and maybe it would make him feel better. I could tell he was in a funk.
Mom and I were catching up on what had been happening with the strange phone calls and then with her and Cody. I wasn’t surprised when she told me that they had finally did the dirty deed. I kind of laughed when she told me because she turned red, as if she’d never had sex before. I couldn’t help but tell her that if she forgot, she’d been pregnant before, which meant she had sex before, hence how I got here. We had a chuckle. She told me she’d never felt more cared for and loved and her and Cody planned to complete the mating soon. They were even talking about actually getting married, which werewolves often did to show further commitment to one another. Also, she wanted to get rid of my fathers last name. I was truly happy for her.
Ironically, after Uncle Tobias had reached out to my fathers parents, he had been unable to track down anything more on Wyatt. It was as if he vanished, or someone was protecting him. His pack was pretty secretive most of the time anyway. They didn’t have the best reputation for being friendly. Can’t say as I was surprised by it, just thinking back to my fathers behaviors over the years.
This odd tenseness stood over us, as we discussed these phone calls and why they were happening. After listening again to the calls that I had recorded, I told her that I indeed thought it could by my Uncle Wyatt. When I was at University, I had visited him at his pack a couple of times. Not for long, usually just dinner and a quick catch up with him and his mate. We were never close but I was trying to get to know them, because, well my father was useless and I wanted to have some kind of relationship with that side of the family. Uncle Wyatt had asked me once how my father was doing, because he knew that he was drinking heavily. I told him, he’s still drinking heavily and that he works nights at the Mill and I rarely saw him. I didn’t say anymore. My Mom never wanted people to know how much he was hurting her. She was to proud. I also think she was worried that my father would find out if she told anyone and kill her. There were many times when the beatings he gave her nearly did kill her. I recall coming home to find her starved and dehydrated, beat to a bloody pulp and tied up in some form or format. She would always beg me not to say anything, and I would nurse her back to health as best I could. I was so glad those days are over.
Mom suddenly changed the subject. “So tell me how are you and Dawson doing? I don’t see any mating mark. Still taking it slow?“. She raised an eyebrow at me while taking a sip from her mug of tea.
Some may think it odd for a mother and daughter to have these kinds of conversations, but I was an adult and for the longest time, all she had was me. I gave her a sad smile. “The truth is Mom, I have been working so much and by the time I get home, he’s already fast asleep. Since he got out of the hospital he hasn’t been the same. His energy is down. He hasn’t shifted again since that incident with the doctor. Maybe that has something to do with it. He’s with the doctor today, and he said the doctor was going to have him shift so he can assess his wolf. That’s why the Alpha went, he can control him with his alpha aura.”
“Things will fall in line as they are supposed to. The Moon Goddess doesn’t make mistakes dear,” Mom patted my knee.
“Hey ladies, we both looked up to see Cody approaching the porch, a huge smile on his face. He had something behind his back and as he reached the top step of the porch, he handed my mother a beautiful bouquet of lilies. Those are her favorite flower.
“These are so beautiful, but how ever did you find these in the fall?“, Mom asked grinning ear to ear.
“I have my ways,” he winked at me. He had asked me the previous week what her favorite flowers were. He was always trying to do things to make my Mom feel special. I admired that about him. He was not afraid to show his emotions or his love for her.
Mom stood and gave him a kiss. “We are a little while ago. I left you a plate, it’s wrapped in foil on the stove, should still be warm.”

Cody, like me, had been working long days to keep up since Dawson was out of commission. “Perfect, I’m going to shower and then I will be down, he turned to me. “What time is Dawson expected back?”
Peaking at my watch, I noticed it was already after seven. “Any minute. I’m actually surprised you haven’t heard from the Alpha, or have you?” I asked.
Cody shook his head no. “I’m sure they will be back soon.” And with that he rushed into the house to get cleaned up.
“Well Mom, I’m going to leave you to your alone time with your mate,” I kissed her on the cheek and stood to leave. She placed her hand on my
arm.
“I’m so thankful for you dear. I’m also thankful we have this new life and that we get to experience it together,” she was always kind of mushy. Maybe it was just with me, I didn’t know. Either way, she was amazing. I gave her a smile and quick hug and bolted down the stairs and back to my place.
