Chapter 92
By the time we made it back, all except the two feral wolves had been freed from cages. Cody was using a crowbar, trying to break the silver chains that had a man shackled to the wall. It appeared he had freed one arm, but was struggling with the other shackle. I approached him and. offered if we wedged it and put both of our strengths on the bar, maybe we could break it. He agreed and we set to work. It took less than ten second for the shackle to break and the man fell to the ground, a moan leaving his cracked and dry lips. His eyes fluttered open and he looked at us with fear in his eyes, until he noticed he was free. He then sat on his butt and scooted himself against the wall, closing his eyes and taking shallow breaths. “Who are you?” I asked him, not even sure he would answer. His eyes opened and he sat staring at me, cringing back into the wall. My Alpha aura must have been putting pressure on his body. I nodded to Dexter and he stepped forward, kneeling down to look the man in the eyes.
“We won’t harm you. We are here to help. Who are you? Where are you from?” Dexter continued to just kneel, making no aggressive moves.
The man gulped and croaked out, “Oregon. Portland.” Then he passed out.
“Shit,” I hissed out. “That is where Wyatt is from. He’s got to be from his pack.” I motioned to Dexter and he picked the guy up and carried him out of the building. Turning to Cody, I asked him about the boy in the first tunnel. He informed me that he was the only one left. Garrett heard him, grabbed the crowbar and went running towards the boy, muttering under his breath about freeing him. We followed behind, giving him space. I had a feeling, this was something we should let him do. He felt guilty enough already.
Once we cleared the door and were all outside, I gathered everyone up that had been outside handling the wolves we had freed. “Ok, what do we know? Any one of them talking?“.
One of Garrett’s pack members stepped forward. “Shawna is talking, the female you rescued. They have been hydrating her and she’s been drinking slowly, gaining her voice back. She is still very weak, hooked up to machines, the doctor is running tests on all of them. They all have silver poisoning, some were injected with wolfsbane, from what I managed to find out in the short time I was at the pack house, he looked back and forth between myself and Alpha Garrett. Garrett stood cradling Alek in his arms.
“Garrett, let’s hand off the boy so they can get him to the doctor. You and I can go back and talk to Shawna. She’s your pack member, she may be more likely to speak with you there. We will leave Dexter and Cody to make the plans here for the next move.” I started to walk towards my pack land, not leaving room for argument. A minute later, the ATV drove past me with the boy on the back and Garrett caught up to me. We walked back in silence, both of us angry and disgusted by what we had just witnessed. This was not the end of this though, the Werwolf Council would have to be made aware. I was internally preparing myself for what was to come in the days ahead.
Ashlynn
We had moved the rescued wolves from the pack house to my clinic. It was a bit more sterile and would keep the other pack members out of the way. I was assisting the pack doctor as best I could, primarily tending to the wolves who had yet to shift back to wolf form. We weren’t sure why they couldn’t shift, except perhaps they were just to weak. Staying in wolf form was probably better for them since they would heal faster
in their wolf forms.
I had just finished drawing some labs on the female that I found was named Shawna. So far, she was the only one able to talk more than a word or two. There was a man who I had been told, said he was from Portland. He hadn’t woke up since he passed out in the tunnel where my Uncle and the rest had found him. This knowledge made me angry. Now we knew that Wyatt was involved in this somehow. Add to his harassment of my mother, kidnapping and torture. I was so confused as to why he would put himself in this mess. Did he think he wouldn’t get caught? The Werwolf Council was going to be floored. He would surely be sentenced to death.
I placed the blood tubes into my centrifuge, hitting the timer and walked out of my lab area. Shawna was sitting up, drinking some juice. I walked over to her and pulled up a chair next to her cot. “Do you feel like talking,” I asked. “No pressure. I just have a lot of things I don’t understand and maybe you can help me.”
I watched as she closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again with a sigh. “I’m going to have to talk no matter what, I just don’t want to have to keep repeating it over and over.” Her voice was barely a whisper. I nodded in understanding, then stood up. As I turned to walk away, she reached out and touched my arm. Can you be here with me? When the Alpha questions me? I would feel more comfortable having a female around.” I patted her hand in reassurance, nodded yes and walked back to my lab. I guess my questions would have to wait a little longer to be answered.
