Chapter 98
Once the tables were cleared, Alpha Gabe stood and invited the Council into the meeting room. The Luna led them to the room, while the Alpha stayed behind for a few minutes to talk with the rest of us. “I will have Dawson, Cody and Carolyn speak with the Council. If I need any more of you, I will send for you. I’d also appreciate it if someone could go get Shawna and Alek, and the wolf from the Portland pack. What was his name?“.
“Robert, Ashlynn offered up.
Alpha Gabe nodded, “Bring him as well.” He then exited and headed to the meeting room.
Ashlynn hung back to be a means of support for her mother and myself. Cody sent Dexter to retrieve the three captive wolves from the Pack House. They had all been staying there in guest rooms, until this mess was figured out. To be on the safe side, guards watched their rooms around the clock and trailed behind them at a respectable distance when they left their rooms. It turned out that Shawna had been sexually assaulted multiple times while in captivity, and so we had assigned her female warriors to make her feel more comfortable. Some of the other wolves had been moved to the hospital in town and were still recovering.
After about thirty minutes, the Luna requested for me to go into the meeting room. Cody gave me a pat on the back as I stood, trying to reassure me. I walked down the hall and knocked on the door, waiting for the Alpha to give me permission to enter.
I walked in the room to find the seven council members at a table in the front of the room, facing towards everyone. I was instructed to move to the chair at the table directly across from them. The two Alpha’s sat directly behind me.
There were always seven council members. The odd number made it possible to break any sort of tie when it came to voting. Council members were always retired Alpha’s and served out their terms until it was determined that they were either ready to retire from the council themselves, or they had aged out. They were never allowed to serve passed the age of seventy, in order to assure they were up with the times, the laws, and that they were still able to function physically. Meaning they had to still be able to fight and defend themselves in the event of attack. Since werwolves aged very slowly, this usually wasn’t a problem. I recognized one of the council members. He was the retired Alpha from my Mother’s Pack, and a good friend of my fathers. This made me feel a little more comfortable. “Please be seated Dawson,” Councilman A told me. That was another thing, they all went by a letter, rather than their names. This identified the region they were over, so that no matter where you were in the world, you knew where that council member came from. Councilman A was from the West Coast Region. There were separate Councils for the areas outside the U.S. and Canada.
“We will ask you some questions, you will answer to the best of your ability. At the end, we will give you an opportunity to add anything that you think may be of importance,” again it was Councilman A who spoke, this also happens to be the one I knew.
“We understand that several months ago, you were shot with a dart, laced with silver and wolfsbane. Is this correct?“, Councilman G was now speaking. He had a bit of an ancient, which was typical of our Eastern Canadian Councilmen. They were usually of French descent.
“Yes, that is correct.” I tried to keep my voice steady. It’s not that I was nervous about talking with them, I was just nervous that some how, I could mess up the outcome of this entire thing, and there was a lot of lives at stake here.
“What were you doing when you were shot with the dart?“, again Councilman G.
“Leaving the Godsend Pack Land. We had met with the Alpha regarding an issue that occurred on our land, instigated by some of their members,” I answered, hoping this is the answer they needed.
“And what issue was that, and how were you personally involved, now Councilman C was asking, he was from the Southeast part of the country and had a slight country twang, but the tone in his voice was almost accusatory.
Taking a deep breath, I went into the story of everything that occurred, up until the point I was hit with the dart. I told them how I was hospitalized for a very long time and had little memory of that hospitalization. They asked me a few more questions, mostly regarding what I had witnessed the night the wolf threw the dead rabbit at the window of Cody’s house, then they dismissed me. As I stood to leave, Alpha Gabe gave me a nod and a smile. I hoped that meant I had said everything the right way.
I exited the meeting room and returned to the dining hall. Cody and Carolyn were sitting there speaking in hushed tones. Ashlynn was pacing by the window, chewing her lip. The three wolves who had been summoned from the pack house were sitting together at the end of the table, sipping on ice water and looking tired. I walked over and took Ashlynn in my arms, breathing in her scent, rain, it always calmed me. She wrapped her arms around my neck and looked into my eyes. “How did it go?“, she asked.

Good, I think. I gave her a kiss on her lips and then turned to Cody. “You’re next man. They said give them five minutes, then come knock on the door.
‘Right. Cody stood, Carolyn standing with him. He brushed some loose hair behind her ear and kissed her on the cheek. “Don’t worry babe, this will hopefully all be over soon and we can move on and have our happily every after, he winked at her and walked out.
Carolyn turned to me. Were they at least nice?“.
I shrugged. I mean we aren’t buddies now but they weren’t rude or difficult. The Councilman from the Southeast is kind of rough, but I got the impression that’s just how he talks. She nodded her head and sat back down, sipping her ice tea.
