Chapter 8
Is that really the reason? How is he different from other rich guys? They usually keep women on the side, but he wants to bring one home?‘ Lia was confused.
She said. “Well, I can visit you now and then.”
Even though she didn’t meet his family yesterday, if she lived with him, the chances of running into them would go way up. making it even harder to explain.
“My place has plenty of rooms, so you moving in here won’t be a big deal, Coby said it so casually, like it was no big thing
“But…” Lia was still hesitant.
“Ms. Phillips, you start work next week. You can stay at my place and hitch a ride every day, and the food and lodging are free, Coby said.
He made it sound so tempting that it was hard to resist. The money was
And she knew she couldn’t really refuse–she’d just treat it like a job.
“Alright, thanks,” said Lia.
Coby’s lips curled up a little. Tll pick you up in the afternoon.”
Lia looked toward the door. “Coby, I can just take a cab.”
too much of a draw, so Lia weakly agreed.
“You’re not feeling well.” He was concerned about her, but in reality, it was his actions that had made her feel that way.
At Allen Group’s secretary office, a few employees were chatting excitedly.
“Did you hear? Ms. Phillips switched jobs, one of them said.
“Isn’t it normal for Ms. Phillips to switch jobs? Mr. Allen was so cold to her. Mya mumbled.
Everyone knew Issac treated Lia poorly, showing her no respect No matter how hard Lia worked or how well she performed, he always found something to criticize.
“Such a pity, Ms. Phillips is so pretty and has such a nice personality. I really hate to see her go someone sighed. After working with Lia for two years, they all knew what she was like, and they were really sad to see her leave, “What can we do? Mr. Allen doesn’t like her, if it were me, I would’ve quit a long time ago,” said someone.
“That’s not the point. Do you guys know where Ms. Phillips is going?” Another employee asked, excited
“Where?” Mya asked..
Ford Group. I saw her with the CEO from Ford Group yesterday, they came out of a private room together, replied the employee.
“What? Really?” This took everyone by surprise.
The employer confirmed. “I saw it with my own eyes, why would I lie? Plus, it looked like she and Mr. Ford were pretty close: she was even wearing his clothes.

One woman cupped her face, envious. “Do you think they’re a couple?”
לל
Coming out of the elevator, Issac overheard their conversation and his face darkened. “Nate, how do you manage your team! So many people doing nothing but gossiping”
The employees instantly went quiet and stood up straight, not daring to say another word.
Nate Harper shot them a harsh look. “Mr. Allen, sorry. I’ll have them reflect on this. You guys get to work!”
Everyone scrambled to their desks, quickly getting back to work.
Issac walked into his office with a cold look. He thought, ‘Lia mens little to me. Her leaving is a good thing–I don’t care at all.
He continued. Pretty close? That woman is way too reserved, there’s no way she’d be close to another guy, especially not a competitor of Allen Group. They must’ve seen wrong. Lia would never do something like that.”
Issac flopped down into his office chair, rubbing his temples.
None of the servants could do anything right. They woke him up too early, and he was going to fire them all sooner or later.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Nina, not getting a response, just walked in. “Oh, Mr. Allen, whats going on? Did someone upset you?”
Nina’s blouse was open, her makeup was heavy, and she smiled sweetly.
She plopped herself onto his lap, casually touching Issac.
After Issac agreed to let her take Lia’s place, she showed up to work today, determined to do whatever it took to make Issac fall for her.
Issac grabbed her chin. “Who upset you? Dressed like that, who are you trying to impress?”
He looked down on women who threw themselves at him, but that didn’t stop him from playing along.
“Isn’t it for you?” Nina’s hands were all over him, sparking things up, and she leaned in to kiss him.
Brrring! Brrring! The sudden noise made Issac push her off him
Nina fumed and pouted. “Mr. Allen, what’s that sound?”
“It’s the alarm Lia set.” Issac said, clearly annoyed.
Lia’s presence could still be felt around him.
‘Do you really think this is going to make me miss you? No way. Issac thought.
“Ugh, so annoying. Why is she everywhere?” Nina pouted and wrapped her arms around–tssac. “Mr. Allen, let’s continue.”
Issac wasn’t in the mood to tease anymore and slapped her hand away.
“Go work first, he ordered Nina.
“Mr. Allen… Nina whined, clearly frustrated.
“It’s work time, not playtime.” He dropped the playful attitude and got serious.
Nina didn’t dare push it. Issac could be super nice when he was in a good mood, but if he didn’t want to continue, he was

In the afternoon, Lia arrived at the Allen villa
Everything here felt both familiar and strange. Luna Allen was over fifty but looked much younger–her real age was hard to
guess,
“Madam, Lia has arrived a servant said to Luna.
Lia stood quietly, waiting for Luna to speak.
Luna, slowly arranging flowers, didn’t even look up. “Oh, you’re here.”
“Good afternoon, Madam,” Lia said politely
Bang! The scissors were thrown onto the table with a loud noise and the servants jumped in surprise. Lia, however, didn’t flinch
“You can leave,” Luna said to all the servants present.
“Yes, Madam.” The servants quickly left, and soon it was just Luna, Lia, and Luna’s personal maid in the large garden. Luna looked at Lia with a half–smile and said disdainfully, “Looks like you’ve grown up, huh?”
Lia kept her cool. “Madam, I’m grateful for all your support over the years.”
“So this is how you’re repaying me?” Luna gave Lia a scornful look
Tm sorry, Madam,” said Lia.
There was no denying that without the Allen family’s help, Lia wouldn’t have been able to finish her education. She was thankful, but she wasn’t going to keep groveling like she did before..

Lia blinked, then said, “Madam, I’m grateful for your adoption, but I’m a person too. I want to live my own life.”
“You think I adopted you out of kindness? If it weren’t for Issac, wouldn’t have. You’ve really let me down. If you want to leave, you better have the guts to make it on your own,” said Lună.
She thought, ‘You’ll always be a maid in this life.
“I’m sorry, Madam. Here’s the 15 million you mentioned. Thanks for all your help. Lia placed a 1.5 million check on the table.
“Where did you get all that money?” Luna stared at the check, furious that Lia actually brought it
“Heh, I was wondering who it was. Guess it’s you.” Issac swaggered in, a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
He glanced at Li and immediately knew she had come to complain.
“Issac, you’re home early today?” Luna immediately shed to loving tone when she saw her son.
“Mom, no matter what she says, I don’t want her at Allen Group. This time, I’m not backing down. If you make her go back, I’m leaving this house,” said Issac.

He thought. If she doem’t beg me, it’s not happening!
Lia kept her head down, ignoring everything Issac said.
Π
Luna glanced at Lia, still thinking Lià hadn’t been humbled enough. But now that Issac was saying this, she’d definitely take
his side.
“Son, are you sure you want her gone?” asked Lana
Issac scoffed. “Tve been saying to get rid of her for ages, but you wouldn’t listen
He knew she was desperate for money. He figured in a few days she’d come crawling back.
Luna thought for a moment, then wrapped her arm around Issa. Tll get rid of her. But you better behave and stop messing with all those had women.”
“Mom. I’m glad you’re finally getting it. Without her, I wouldn’t be doing this,” Issac said.
This time, even Luna was against Lia. Issac thought, ‘Lia, let’s see how long you can hold out.
“Really?” Luna was still skeptical.
When Issac was younger, he had really liked her, but at some point, he started finding joy in tormenting her. Of course, I was exactly what Luna had wanted.
She totally deserved it after all these years.

“This woman is so annoying, always sticking her nose in everything. Does she really think I’ll marry her? No way,” Issac said. clearly disgusted.
Lia felt a sharp pain in her chest. Even though she kept telling herself he hated her, hearing those words still hurt.
Luna slapped Issac’s arm. “Who said anything about you marrying her? She’s just someone to sleep with you. She’s not good enough for you. If you’re marrying anyone, it better be someone from the right background.”
He
never even gave
her a second look.
Issac couldn’t wait for her to disappear from his life. “Then let her go, and don’t let her come back to the Allen family.”
Lúna glanced at Lia “Did you hear that?”
“Thanks for your help, madam.” Lia had never felt so free. After all these years, the debt was finally cleared.
“I won’t bother you two anymore.” She walked out with her head held high,
Seeing her so determined. Issac figured she was just pretending.
In a few days, she’d be back, crying and begging them to save Layla.
Lia seemed tough, but Issac knew her too well. She wasn’t strong at all.
“Why are you looking at her? She’s already out of sight,” Luna reminded him.
“Mom, I wasn’t looking at her. She’s just a maid,” said Issac.
did you ever like her?” asked Luna.
“Are you serious? How could I like her? Even if I work myself to the bone, I’m not going to accept Lia,” Issac scoffed

“Stop saying that. It’s allover, now. Zach’s been fired, too, and she’s no longer our problem.” Luna made sure Zach Phillips left. With Lia, Zach, and Layla, their lives wouldn’t be easy.
“Mom, you fired Zach?” Issac was surprised. Zach had worked for the Allen family for years. With him gone. Lia didn’t really have any ties left to them.
“What else could I do? Do you want to keep track of her?” Luna id, annoyed.
Issac shrugged. “Do whatever you want. 1 can’t stand her. How did we even end up adopting her?”
Luna’s face tightened, her fists clenched. “It’s all in the past. What matters now is that you get your father’s approval.”
“I know,” said Issac.
Meanwhile, Lia returned to her rented apartment and started packing up.
Leaving the Allen family on good terms was the best she could hope for. She didn’t owe them anything anymore. From now on, she was going to work–hard, make money, and take care of Layla
Beep! Suddenly, the phone rang. Lia looked at the screen and saw it was his call.
“Mr…” She quickly changed her tone. “Coby,”
Coby smiled slightly. “Have you finished packing?”
“Almost. Sorry, I had to step out for a bit, so I lost track of time.” She hadn’t expected him to call so s yet, right?”
Coby didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, “What room are you in?”
“Room 4,” she replied without thinking,
“Open the door,” ordered Coby.
“Huh?” Lia looked at the door, and just then, the doorbell rang
“Tll be right there.” She rushed to the door.
Through the peephole, she saw Coby
so soon. “You’re not here
He was holding his phone in one hand and had his other hand in his pocket. When he saw she was looking through the peephole, he leaned in closer, smiling.
Coby’s smile was really nice. It wasn’t cold at all. His dimples showed just a little, making his face look softer, like there was
distance between them.

Lia quickly opened the door. “What are you doing here?”
He looked around the room casually, then his gaze landed on her face as he adjusted his tie. “I’ve got a dinner meeting here.” Her place might be small, but it was clean and tidy.
“A dinner meeting?” she said. “Oh, please, make yourself at home. Sorry, it’s a bit messy.”
She hurried to move the stuffed toys off the sofa to make space.
Lia’s place was modest, furnished with just a small square table, a single sofa, and two tiny stools, Occasionally, Layla visited

but aside from that, There was hardly anywhere to sit.
Coby glanced at the stuffed pig she was holding and casually asked, “How much’s the rent here?”
*300 dollars, she answered while she was tidying up.
For such a big city, it was actually a pretty good deal. She had been there for two years and really liked it.
“You’re moving out,” said Coby.
“Hmm?” Lia looked at him, confused, as she was cleaning up.
Coby calmly undid the button on his sleeve. “Didn’t you want to save money? You’re moving, so why keep this place?”
Even though he said that, Lia knew she couldn’t stay at his place forever. If he found some other girl, she’d have to leave. Plus, Layla sometimes came over.
“It’s fine.” Lia didn’t plan to move out because it’d be hard to find another place like this one with such good value.
He raised an eyebrow and pulled her closer with one arm around Lia’s waist. Lia instinctively braced herself on the armrest to avoid falling into his arms.
“Mr… Coby,” said Lia.
Their eyes met, and Lia saw that playful glint in his eyes
He asked softly, “Still have a fever?”
“No.” Lia turned her face away and shook her head.
“Your face is still pretty red,” said Coby
That was because they were so close.
“Let me check if you still have a fever.” His big hand tightened around her waist, and Lia ended up sitting “Uh
Then, his thumb and finger gently pinched her chin, making her look at him.
His forehead touched hers lightly, and their breaths mixed, making the air feel hot.
