Chapter 114
Alyssa changed many of the rules that Cathy had set. The other members of the secretarial department were worried that Alyssa would make things difficult for them, so all of them acted very cautious around her.
This was especially so for Sarah. She had always obeyed Cathy and opposed Alyssa. Now, she was very afraid that Alyssa would retaliate against her.
Sarah initially thought that Cathy would soon kick Alyssa out of their department. After all, Andrew and Cathy’s relationship seemed to go beyond that of an employer and an employee. However, to Sarah’s dismay, in the end, this newbie Alyssa pushed Cathy out of the department.
Sarah now trembled in fear every day. Whenever she saw Alyssa, she would avoid the latter like the plague. Sarah only hoped that Alyssa would ignore her.
In reality, everyone in the secretarial department was overthinking. Although Alyssa changed some of the rules set by Cathy once she came into power, she did not find fault with anyone. Alyssa even reduced their workload.
In the past, Cathy only did work related to Andrew. Sometimes, when Andrew needed to be out of the office but Cathy had a lot of work herself, she would pass off her work to her subordinates because she wanted to follow him.
Moreover, Cathy was a very controlling person. She wanted to be involved in everything. Every single issue in every department had to go through her.
Initially, the reports from the various departments were to be completed by the department’s clerks and assistants. However, since Cathy wanted everything to go through her, she had assigned the reports to the other six secretaries, making their work complicated and messy.
Now that Alyssa had asked the secretaries to delegate all the documentation and reports from the various departments to their respective assistants and clerks, the secretarial department could relax a little.
Not only did Alyssa reduce the workload of the secretaries, but she also reduced the burden on Andrew.
The schedule arranged by Cathy for Andrew required him to attend to almost every matter personally. After studying the schedule set by Cathy, Alyssa felt that a good leader should not need to do everything by himself. He should let his subordinates do things whenever appropriate.
For example, Andrew should not need to personally negotiate with the company’s fabric suppliers. Hence, Alyssa delegated the matter to Simon as well as the procurement department.
Another example was that she helped Andrew turn down lunch or dinner invitations from some of their distributors. In Alyssa’s opinion, Andrew’s primary focus in the company was to supervise the design of good products and ensure each department did their work well so that the distributors could sell the products easily. Having meals with the distributors was secondary.
Of course, Alyssa filled in Andrew’s schedule with additional things such as more frequent engagements with the company’s employees to foster the company’s internal relations. However, her arrangements were very simple. She did not create unnecessary staff meetings or team–building workshops on weekends. She was well aware that if she took up weekends, the employees would probably not like it.
She arranged for such engagements to occur during lunches and dinners. She arranged for Andrew to have meals with everyone in the company’s cafeteria. Besides that, whenever a department made an outstanding contribution to the company, she asked Andrew to treat the employees of that department to a meal. Not only did it make the staff think that Andrew was fair in reward and punishment, but it also made everyone feel that he was approachable. As a result, the staff members were less afraid of him.
These changes made everyone feel more relaxed working at the company. When they treated the company as their home, they would spare no effort when working for it.
