“Nikolai,” I said, my voice lower than usual but still rough.
He stirred, lashes fluttering. Then those familiar eyes opened, dazed for a moment before settling on me.
“Alessandro?” he mumbled, his voice hoarse, distant.
Jexhaled slowly when he didn’t speak coldly. “I thought something happened. You didn’t call. Didn’t text.”
He blinked a few times, like he was trying to remember how to be present, then sat up against the headboard. “My phone died.”

I glanced at the dead device on the nightstand, my jaw tightening. “You couldn’t plug it in?”

I gave a tight nod, stepping closer, lowering myself to the edge of the bed. “You should.”
That made him laugh just a little. Dry and humorless. “You came in here worried I was dead and now you’re telling me to take a shower?”
I looked at him. Really looked.
“You’re not dead,” I said then stood up and walked towards the bathroom.
“Get in, I spoke after opening the door.
