(The Remains of Summer) Chapter 10
Chloe’s cries faded as Ethan collapsed on top of her,
He chuckled, showering her with kisses. “Such a drama queen.”

Chloe pouted, tracing patterns on his chest with her fingertips. “I can be as
dramatic as I want. You’re marrying someone even more dramatic tomorrow.”
His eyes darkened. He kissed her.“I told you, I’ll give you everything but my
name.”
“Even if I get married, I will still love you and our baby.” He stroked her belly.
Chloe smiled seductively, wrapping her legs around him.“You better.”
Ethan pinned her arms above her head, his movements growing more
forceful.
Their moans filled the room.
Finally, Ethan pulled away, straightening his tuxedo in the mirror. He kissed
Chloe’s forehead and quietly left the room.
On the way to the wedding venue, he turned his phone back on. He expected
a barrage of texts and missed calls from Amelia. He even had excuses prepared.

But the screen was empty.

He called her repeatedly. No answer.
Panic clawed at him. He told himself she was just resting, still recovering
from her illness.
He set his phone aside, looking out the window at the beach. In the distance,
ambulances and police cars clustered near the shoreline, a crowd gathered around
something they’d pulled from the water.
His heart skipped a beat. He looked away.
The wedding venue was a vision in blue, Amelia’s favorite color, adorned
with roses and orchids. A renowned pianist played her favorite music.
The guests and media waited expectantly.
Everything was perfect.
Except for the bride.
The clock ticked, but the doors remained closed. Murmurs rippled through
the crowd. Ethan’s anxiety intensified. His palms were sweating. He was about to
call Amelia again when…
The doors swung open.

A white shape slowly entered.
He started forward, then stopped.
It wasn’t Amelia. It was a white coffin.
Funeral directors in somber suits flanked the casket.

Ethan stood frozen as they carried it towards him. As they set it down, he
found his voice, a roar of disbelief.“Who are you? What is this? Get out!”
The lead director ignored him, bowing his head respectfully. “Mr. Carter, our
condolences.”
Ethan’s fury exploded. He grabbed the man’s collar. “What are you talking
about? Get out!”
He shoved the man away and stumbled towards the coffin.
He looked inside.
And the world went silent.
“A–Amelia?”
The director approached, his voice filled with sorrow. “Ms. Price took her own life three days ago. She suffered from severe depression. She was recovered
