Chapter 10
With her long legs propped up on the bicycle, Amelia lazily observed the scene unfolding before her. Her strong presence made it impossible to ignore her.
Jackson glanced at her, suppressing his frustration. He
shoved the card into her hand, his voice low, “Amelia, take the money, thank us, and then leave.”
Today was Mia’s day to be formally accepted as an apprentice in the medical field, and he didn’t want any distractions.
Amelia had been casually leaning against her bike, her dark eyes cool and indifferent. When she heard his words, a slight smile curled on her lips.
A charity handout?
“Take the money and leave“?
The Milton family really spared no effort in trying to paint her as a greedy, “poor relative” trying to take advantage of them.
Just when everyone thought Amelia would accept the card and leave, the next moment, she tossed the card right back. The motion was crisp and decisive, fast and accurate!
Everyone froze.
Mary couldn’t control herself and screamed, “What are you doing?! We’re helping you, don’t take advantage of our kindness!”

“Helping me?” Amelia rested her chin on her hand, her smile growing slowly. “Ms.Crawford, I’m not interested in your little act. As for the money, Mr. Milton should keep it for you–after all, you’re the one who climbed into his life as the third wife, and that must be quite exhausting.”
“You! You little…” Mary was so enraged her chest shook, nearly spitting out the insults she was holding back.
Jackson clenched his fist, visibly furious. If it weren’t for the people around, he might have even raised his hand.
Mary wasn’t Jackson’s first wife. He came to LA to do business and was swept off his feet by Mary, leading to their passionate affair.
Jackson had been attracted to the Crawford family’s influence in LA and discarded his first wife from the small town to marry Mary, but these details were never spoken aloud.
Amelia had just destroyed the image they’d worked so hard to build!
How had they never realized this girl was so difficult to deal with?
Everyone’s expressions turned sour. Even the elderly woman frowned, clearly unaware of this hidden backstory.
Mia, however, knew exactly what was going on. Smart as always, she knew this wasn’t the right time to let Amelia say
more.
She gently spoke up, “Dad, Mom, it’s time to go inside and eat.”

Her words restored composure to both Jackson and Mary.
Jackson, the master of crafting a good public image, looked at Amelia. “Since you’re from a small town and haven’t learned to filter your words, we’ll overlook this.” He then turned to Mary. “Next time, when you’re helping someone, you should pay more attention. You wouldn’t want your kindness to backfire.”
Mary still glared at Amelia, her eyes filled with venom, but her gaze couldn’t break Amelia’s calm.
Amelia let her stare, her appearance stunning, eyes dark and profound, hiding endless mysteries. Her attitude was like a slap in the face, making Mary nearly jump out of her skin again.
“Mom, don’t get worked up over an outsider,” Mia wisely stepped in, linking arms with Mary. “Ms. Adler is a sensible person. She won’t misunderstand you based on some rumors.”
Her words were a reminder for Mary to maintain her
composure.
It was also a subtle way to provide Mary with an out, so she wouldn’t damage her image.
Sure enough, Mary quickly recovered, sighing in regret. “I really tried to help and ended up making a mistake.”
Mia reassured her, “Mom, you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just that people nowadays have such strong egos. When you offer a card so directly, sensitive people may think you’re looking down on them.”

So this was her subtle way of implying Amelia was poor and petty?
Amelia raised her eyes, gazing at her with interest.
The little bitch’s tactics were quite subtle.
