Sebastian’s POV
“It’s not fair!” Lily whines, pouting. “Miranda is making outrageous demands! She actually had the audacity to wager the formula! Are we really going to let a half–breed dictate terms like this?”
Lily inches closer to me, pushing right past any semblance of comfortability I once felt. I inhale sharply. My inner wolf growls, wanting to lurch and attack Lily for being so close. I let the growl escape my throat and can feel Lily freeze beside me. She quickly takes a step back, putting distance between us.
“If you’re so certain that Miranda won’t succeed, then there’s no reason to be afraid and lash out like this,” I respond in a deadpan tone.
“I’m…
just worried about the possibility of her being right, no matter how small the possibility is,” Lily stammers. She shifts in her spot. My attention is quickly called to the doors that open. Evan walks through with the same pair of sunglasses on his face.
“Sounds like you already know you’re going to lose, so you’re planning on breaking your promise,” Evan states in a sarcastic tone. His sudden words take Lily aback, the shock and surprise she feels written all over her face.
“Evan,” I shoot a look at him, crossing my arms over my chest, “You shouldn’t talk to your mother like that.”
T–That’s not what Mommy meant, Evan!” Lily loudly projects her patient tone to cover her sudden embarrassment. Her face contorts into a sweet smile at Evan She reaches out for him, her hand landing on his shoulder.
Evan immediately shrugs her hand off of him, stepping to the side with his hands shoved into his pockets. Lily’s hand floats in the air. Her eyes widen and she awkwardly recalls her hand back to her side.
“Sebastian,” Lily’s smile falters. She glances at Evan, who barely gives her the time of day, before turning her attention back to me. “Evan’s behavior really hurts me. He’s my son, and yet he treats me like this.”
“Evan is in a bad mood today. You should leave before he becomes even more upset,” I sigh. I fight the urge to lay out everything she’s done to harm her relationship with Evan and instead choose silence.
Lily’s face turns a bright red and her nostrils flare. She doesn’t retort or whine like she usually does. Instead, she bows her head and quickly exits the room, slamming the door behind her.
Once the door settles, Evan huffs from his spot on the couch. I glance at him and frown, making my way towards him.
“Your judgment must be broken,” Evan crosses his arms over his chest. He looks away from me. “Everything about her- the way she talks, the way she acts is disgusting. I can’t stand her.”
“Easy, Evan,” I warn, my frown growing, “she’s your mother.”
“She’s not my mother,” Evan mumbles under his breath.
I can barely make the words out, having to squint to try and hear better. My curiosity about Evan’s sudden outward attitude piques..
Evan has always been more reserved with his feelings towards Lily, but he’s never had this big of a reaction before. My son typically shows indifference towards Lily, opting to remain quiet while she whines and complains. All of a sudden, he’s confrontational, hostile, even. It’s…unusual.
“You don’t have to wear your sunglasses inside, you know, I breathe out, trying my best to diffuse the situation that lies before me.

Evan’s hands fly to his face, grabbing the sunglasses. He doesn’t take them off, though, and instead, he pushes them farther up his face. Is he shielding himself? What, or Who, does he need protection from?
“I’ll…” my words fall off as a pang of sadness hits my chest weighing it down, “I’ll find a way to get the potion from Miranda, Evan, I promise.”
Evan’s head snaps to look at me. I can’t tell where he’s looking from behind his sunglasses.
“What do you think of Miranda?” Evan quickly asks.
Miranda’s name rings in my ears. My body heats up as irritation flows throughout my body. I take a deep breath to calm and steady my nerves, not wanting to let my anger mix in with Evan’s.
“Miranda is…” 1 hesitate, being very careful with what I say next, “she is a very arrogant and stubborn woman.
“And you’re a self–important jerk!” Evan shoots back, raising his voice at me. He storms out of the room and down the hallway.
What the hell is going on? Evan has only met Miranda once, so why is he all of a sudden defending her like his life depends on it? I can’t rack my brain around the thought.
What did Miranda say to him? What did she do to him to make him so loyal to her?
Iscoff at the thought and shake my head, turning back to the work on my office desk.
Later that evening-
I pinch the bridge of my nose as soon as my back hits the backseat. My Beta closes the door behind me and I try my best to relax.
I take deep breaths and calm my body down, my fist slowly unclenching at my side. My eyes flutter closed and 1 can feel my body finally relax.
“Alpha, isn’t that Miranda up ahead?” My Beta’s words shock me to life. I sit up in the seat, my eyes wide as I scan the environment outside the car. “Does she…does she llave kids?”
I freeze. The hair on my body raises at the thought. I shake my head.
No. No…it can’t be. Miranda can’t have kids.
I turn my head to the side as the car slows, my gaze landing on a familiar figure.
There she is. She holds the hands of two small children. They are all smiling, happy to be there with one another. She swings their hands and the children giggle.
Miranda looks so…peaceful. Perfectly content with the two children that grasp her hands.
If you were to search for the word ‘happiness‘ in a dictionary, their image would be the definition.
My breathing turns heavy and my palms become clammy and sweaty. I retreat into the backseat, heat slicing through my chest. My heart races and my ears heat up.
Is this what jealousy feels like? The feeling surges throughout my body, making me feel hot. I seeth from anger
and longing, 1 look back at Miranda and her kids.
Miranda. She’s a woman who, against all logic and reason, night actually be my fated mat prancing around with two children as if it’s nothing.
She had children with another man

The thought leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth. My expression darkens the r
I think about it.
The wolf inside of me stirs. He feels uneasy at the revelation. His low growl vibrates my throat, filling in the silence that surrounds me.
