Nathan paused for a good while before opening up, “When I was twenty–eight, I got hit with a terminal illness. My hair fell out, my body shriveled up, and I lost control over everything, even my bladder. At first, she was there for me, but she left before the end came.”
“Sis, now that you know the truth, do you still think I should be with her?”
Nathalie felt like her heart was being scorched by fire. Her eyes were bloodshot, tears spilling over in an instant.
She couldn’t bear the thought of such a tragic fate for Nathan, her beloved brother. She had always cherished him, and this wasn’t the ending he deserved.
Tears streamed down her face.
Nathan tried to wipe them away, but they just kept coming.
All he could do was hold her tight, “Don’t be sad. At least in this lifetime, we can rewrite our destinies.”
Nathalie buried her face in his chest, soaking his shirt with her tears.
Once she’d calmed down a bit, she sternly told him, “From now on, you need to quit drinking, smoking, staying up late, and being unhappy.”
Nathan seized the moment, “As long as you’re by my side, I’ll take care of myself for you.”
Nathalie sobbed, “I promise, I’m never leaving you again.”
Dominick walked in and was taken aback by the sight of Nathan and Nathalie clinging to each other, tears flowing.
Lizzy hurriedly pulled Dominick out, “Come on, let’s give them some space.”
But Dominick couldn’t resist a cheeky grin, “Hey, do you need that… engagement ring you picked up in Malta?”
His joke lightened the mood, chasing away the sadness.
Nathalie blushed crimson.
Nathan shot Dominick a glare for interrupting, “Get out.”
Dominick made a swift exit.
Nathan took Nathalie’s hand and walked out, and seeing them together, Dominick and Lizzy quickly pieced together the truth about Nathan and Nathalie’s relationship.
The trio erupted in cheers.
Right then, the doorbell chimed, breaking the moment.
Ford dashed to the door and returned with a package.
Inside was an invitation.
The Stewart family had invited Nathan to Ashley’s birthday bash.
The invite included three tickets.
Nathan held the invitation and looked warmly at Nathalie, “Nathalie, are you coming?”
Nathalie replied, “Ashley might not be thrilled to see me. I could ruin her party. It’s better if I skip it.”
Nathan pouted a bit, “If you’re not going, then why should I?”
Nathalie spoke sincerely, “Nathan, you have to go. This might be Ashley’s way of announcing your engagement. Since you don’t have feelings for her, it’s best to clear things up and set her free.”
Nathan nodded, “You’re right.”
Friday night rolled around, and Ashley’s birthday party kicked off with a bang.
The Stewart estate was the backdrop, setting the stage for an intimate family affair, where guests were mostly close–knit relatives and friends.
Among the crowd were three generations of the Rowland family, the Camerons from the Dawson family, the elder McCoys, and a host of other aristocrats.
When Nathan arrived at the Stewart place, the room buzzed with excitement.
Ashley, dazzling in her elegant gown and surrounded by staff, stepped out to greet Nathan.
Nathan, why are you so late? I’ve been waiting forever!”
